Will External Firewire Card Fix OS X firewire driver issues?

I have come to understand that the firewire drivers built in OS X (even the latest version) are not up to snuff, and are a cause of spiking and dropouts for a certain design of firewire audio cards. Would getting an external card for my powerbook bypass the issue?
