Midi Issue - controlling hardware (DP/4+)

Hope this is the right place for this

I'm attempting to control my Ensoniq DP/4+ via midi in Cubase. Am hoping that I can automate the effects parameters by drawing in curves on the proper CC#. This should be possible right!? I'm able to do it with my Nord Lead 2x quite easily.

Part of the problem is that the manuals available online are missing the crucial section on Midi. They must all come from the same source because all of them mysteriously skip this section!

I assume however, that the # of each parameter displayed on the LED is that of the CC#. I'm not having any success in getting it to take though. Drawing in something on the assumed CC# elicits some reaction from the DP/4 (red light indicating midi transmission lights up) but none of the values actually change on the DP/4.

The only other variable I can think of that could (but shouldn't) have an effect is that I've got it plugged into my Echo Mia Midi sound card, which is not the primary sound card. I just got a TC Konnekt card as well, but the Mia Midi port still shows up as being active and available. The TC midi ports are taken by the Nord which is plugged into the DP/4.

Does that sound right or is there something critical I'm not understanding?

Any help would be much appreciated!! I'm inspired as hell but I feel like I'm on a time consuming goose chase to get back to my regular work flow with these new pieces.
