Has anybody tried the demo yet? I am curious what you all think of it especially comparing it to the uad neve e.q.'s and other good channel strips? My am out of action for a while hence this question?

Only been playing with it for a few hours and my initial impression was that it was a bit bland - especially after all the UAD 'character' stuff - and I didn't particularly like the compressor. That was just on individual tracks.

However, I've just set up a quick thing with EZDrummer and used the 88RS on the individual outs and I have to say it works really well. Such a tricky thing to put into words, but you don't get that overprocessed sound you'd get by using, say, the 1073 on every channel. Very smooth, very natural. Doesn't really sound like anything's been EQ-ed if you know what I mean - it all just sounds 'right'. Just what's needed in a Channel Strip I suppose...

Like I said though, just a very quick test for me so far.

5 instances are taking up 21% of my 2 cards.

I love it, I think it is quickly becoming the best in the UAD in my opinion. I like the comp, I love the EQ, The gate is the best that I've got, and it's way more efficient than I thought it would be...UAD did a great job. I am hit and miss on the LA3A that came out at the same time, but I think it will do a great job on some things for sure. If you have a UAD card, don't try the 88RS unless you are ready to buy it, because after you use it...you will want to buy it. Definitely a better offering than the Helios, I own it but still am luke warm about it. For me it's only worked on guitars, and only sometimes. The 88RS has sounded really good on everything I've tried it on so far, I am scrounging up money to get it...

The LA3A is becoming my goto for bass...

I like the channel strip on drums, and some other things. It wails over the EX-1 old strip.

+1 for the LA-3A on bass. Just works and easy to use.

I tested it a few weeks ago on a few mixes, side by side with urs csp and other uad plugs. I felt that the 88RS needed more extreme EQ-ing and more radical compressor settings to get it to punch like the csp mix I did (which I did first if that matters).

Also whatever I put through it always sounded kind of the same. Alotta Money for a one-trick pony (and I already have some one-trick pony's so I'm looking for a more versatile strip like the CSP).

But then again, that's only my opinion.

I almost know what you mean - it is a bit of a "one trick" plug, but it's a bloody neat trick. Perhaps not as versatile as the 1073, and certainly not as versatile as the URS CSP by any means, but I still love it. The gate is a killer, and whilst the EQ is a bit blander than some it is still a very usable strip.
There are not many ways to get the equivalent of a complete Neve 88 console apart from a stack of UAD cards & this beast - in my 3 card setup, I can use 24 channels of 88RS and still have room for the comps should I want to.

Bass compressor - someone said the LA3A. That's okay - but the new DBX 160 smokes it on any Fender type bass by miles.

Damnit, I hate I can't demo these things. I'm still not sure if I want to buy the UAD thingie (working on a MBP), and I just can't demo these and know if they sound that good... Very frustrating

Same for me at first - now I wouldnt even think of mixing drums without it - I also recently used it as part of a vocal chain and it sounded very good.

Just a great sounding extremely versatile plug

Why not?
You should have access to a 14-day unrestricted demo period.
All you have to do is activate it from the UA Control "Authorizations" sub-panel.

I believe JPeters86 does not have a card, which indeed makes it difficult to demo the plugin.

I bought my UAD based on reviews I had read, and luckily I found what I was hoping for.

Cheers, Thomas

But you know they sound good , every forum on the internet says so , every audio magazine printed says so .... so do you think if you buy a UAD-1 you'll be the only person on the planet who doesnt like the sound.

Its just common knowledge a porsche 11 is a nice car and a UAD-1 is a nice DSP card ....

However working with a MBP id probebly give it a miss as you'll only be able to use an expander and the fact they only contain one card would be very frustrating , i have 2 UAD-1's which goes well with all my native stuff.
