Making a .dmg from a program CD for backup etc

I want to make a copy of a couple programs to stick on a DVD disk to transfer to another computer, as well as have a backup.

How would I pull the program from the CD to turn it into a .dmg file to place a couple of .dmg files onto a single DVD.

Would I use the disk utility...if so exactly how?

or

Is there another program I must look into??

Thanks,
C
