Most Efficient way to program drums?

I have Battery 3, Fruity Loops, Cubase, and Live 6. I find FL's step sequencer to be very fast at letting me program drum beats easily, but in every other program, I have to use the piano roll which takes more time. How do you guys program drums? do you just sit down with the piano roll and plot away?

Also, I find it to be somewhat of a pain to actually locate the particular drum sound I am looking for when plotting, do you really have to switch between battery and your DAW to see what sample corresponds to what note? it seems to take so much time to just get started, and then I might forget what line of blocks is the snare, it just frusterates me.. I wish the piano roll had the names of the samples instead of the names of the notes!!!

I draw out everything in the piano roll or drum editor from DP though I now try recording midi over the master keyboard. needs some takes (I track certain groups per take) but still faster and more detailed then drawing and scoring which I detest anyways...

I play the drums one track at a time using the MIDI keyboard.

It takes a few seconds per drum sound.

I usually have 1/16 notes auto quantize on, and then either remove it partly (or whole) after recording or change the resolution or swing if necessary.

If you use a good sample cd, arranged properly with nice layout, it's a matter of a couple of minutes before you have slamming beat finished.
