Lots of sites are not displayed correctly, and it interfered with my XP taskbar, and it's already been hacked, i.e. there are some serious security holes... Not good. Deleted it after 10 minutes...

It IS a beta version guy, but go ahead and have your fun.... for now. Apple's not the bumbling bunch of incompetents like the chumps sitting on the IE abandonware over at Microsloth. And if we've learned anything from iTunes, it's not just about porting software - there's a bigger strategy involved.

Huh? A beta version should do a little better than that. It wasn't even fast, it took ages to contact websites in the first place...

JAJAJAJA Just like you're silly windoze OS my friend...
All these issues will probably be resolved when the non-beta version is released.

From Wiki:

open betas are to a larger community group, usually the general public. The testers report any bugs that they found and sometimes minor features they would like to see in the final version.

Of course there are going to be issues once they initially release it to the huge windows market. That's why it's a beta... so people will discover and report the bugs and flaws which will be addressed in next versions. There is even a menu item titled "report bugs to Apple." Couldn't get any easier than that! Oh wait it can get easier, if you don't like beta software - don't download it.

Well it's obvious Apple wants to make the iphone (which uses a full version of Safari) more accessible to windows users.

Actually, in this whole iphone fiasco, this is the first real mistake I've seen Apple make- They should have done this months ago.

Ooooh, but on the other hand, that might have given the Windows crowd too much time to figure out that Safari sucks, and they might then pass on an iphone.

(posted with a Mac, using Safari)

Let's hope they keep making these mistakes my Apple stock is up over 30% since Januany 1

During the keynote Jobs did do a live test with ibench which showed Safari to be faster so it wasn't just an unsubstantiated claim. Anyways, I personally don't care what the benchmarks say. I happened to be doing some accounting in parallels XP last night and I downloaded Safari for Windows just for fun and checked it out. My experience that for the 5 minutes I was on Safari, it did exactly what it was supposed to do. It downloaded pages without issues. No more and no less.

This isn't directed at you specifically Tamas but it's kind of funny how some people seem to really define themselves by their computer platform. That goes for both Mac and PC. Despite what those stupid commercials say we are not Macs and PCs! You never see people this eagerly crusading against rival television manufacturers.

I was just using Safari on a client's brand new C2D iMac and IT was messing up some websites.

His "Mac expert" (I'm just a web and database guy) has the same problem but doesn't know how to fix it.

From some googling, I think it appears it may be related to a corrupted font cache... but I'm no Mac expert, they just keep me around to implement their designs and do their e-commerce.

I suppose I'll have to install Safari on one of my machines if its usage starts coming up. Still, it's going to have to come up a LONG way, to catch up to Opera on Win... right now, Safari is still a relatively small part of the Mac traffic we measure. And I'm no currently testing for Opera (but then, it's usually pretty consistent with FF and IE in my previous experience.)

Now I know that the benchmarks they use are full of Sh*t for sure.
They say that Opera is the slowest.
Well, as a user of IE, Safari AND Opera, I can tell you that Opera is the fatsets of the three.
I don't use Firefox however, so I can't comment on that.
But I find both Safari and IE painfull to use compared to Opera.

apple always says that. just like their processors were so much faster than intel all these years was a marketing crock.

i would think it would be hard to be as fast as IE on a windows machine because IE is embeeded and wriiten into windows. I know Firefox was slower than IE on my windows machine. made me go back to IE

Right, in my experience (and I'm a web guy) IE SIX was, indeed, faster than FireFox with the cache turned off.

That's necessary for web developers testing changes, obviously. When I'm working on a site I HAVE to have IE up and running to see my changes, because even with caching ostensibly set off in FireFox, it often refuses to freshly load a changed page.

I chalk this up to the FF teams attachment to big cache sizes (to get that supposedly competitive "speed" they touted)... if it was simply an oversight, they would have corrected the behavior in FF2.

That said, I still prefer FireFox, even though FF 2 is manifestly more buggy than FF 1.5x, particularly with regards to new features like WYSIWYG editing in compatible web forms. But the inclusion of a WORKING page search was SO NEEDED and SO welcome. And SO late to the table. And, even buggy as it can be, the WYSIWYG editing is a nice feature... I'd come to really like that in IE.

Anyhow, if it wasn't for lack of text resizing options (and the requirement to test against IE 7) I would probably be happier with IE 6 and stuck with it for everyday use.

At any rate, I'm about to do set a system restore point, cross my fingers, and try installing the Safari 3 Beta...

BTW, does anyone else wonder about that Safari 5% browser share that's being touted?

It doesn't seem to jive with Mac marketshare figures... seemingly indicating that everyone with a Mac uses Safari all the time -- which the numbers ALSO show is not true... and/or spend MUCH, MUCH more time browsing than their non-Safari, non-Mac bretheren.

Mac marketshare overall is about 3%. But Safari webshare is 5%? What gives?

What I said on the speed was as a reply to a previous poster that thought a new browser is nothing exciting. I just got the info from the apple keynote, aparently the test was done with ibench that loads several pages in a browser and time the result. Anyone can perform these tests with ibench if they want i guess.

Ayway a faster browser is always good and if its free why complain. Now it seems to be full of bugs on windows so why bother.

safari and firefox both run great on my macs.

i'll reserve judgement on any windows stuff till it's out of beta. any other discussion is a little premature till the real thing is out.

It's called lying.
Just like they lied for years in Intel Vs PowerPC tests. Except when Apple started useing Intels, suddenly, the intels WERE faser. Weird eh?

I rally don't care what some stupid Ibench test shows for speed.
I've used various browsers, and Opera is, IMO, still the best.
i also liek the way it has emal integrated in it, like netscape used to have.

I'm typing this while using Safari on my Windows XP PC. It is working very nicely and is very fast, works perfect with Gearslutz despite what others had posted. I'm liking it so far!
