Thread Starter | out of memory problems when i have 2gb free!? Im currently using nuendo with a new computer i recently built that has 4GB of ram, which i figured would be more than enough, but in this one massive project file i have i keep getting memory errors when i try to add new vst instruments and stuff, and earlier today i tried loading a new sample in drumagog and it said im out of memory and it cant load it so i checked out the task manager and it seems like my computer is only using half the ram it could or something ![]() you can see the plateau where i was getting drumagog errors about being out of memory do i have something setup wrong or what? my computer clearly knows it has a 4.5gb limit as seen in that commit charge section of the task manager, why cant nuendo utilize it? |

| its a limitation of how nuendo is written, and windows xp. as its 32 bit it cant address more than 4 gigs of memory, and windows reserves 2 gigs for the system when it has that option. one thing that could give you more memory however is to turn off all the fancy images of windows. go back to classic view, get rid of your desktop picture. that worked for me when i was sequencing an orchestra. also you could try freezing, and unloading, various tracks. |

| Sounds like your ram is bad. I would go to Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool and download the ISO file and burn that image to a CD and then boot your computer with that disk and it will run a memory test of your memory outside if your Operating system. If you get any errors, its pretty much safe to say that you have a bad stick or faulty motherboard.. More likely the ram though.. I would start out by testing the sticks one by one, and if they pass, start adding one more at a time until your with your full load of ram.. But, its more then likely your RAM. I just had this same issue and got mine replaced and I've been good to go. The system may run fine because your not actually having to use the defective section of the memory.. i.e one of the various SDRAM chips on the memory, until you actually load a project that finally needs to use it.. Anyway, that would be the first place i would look. |

| got your solution windows cant normally address 4 gigs of ram, but you can make it =) go to your boot.ini file in the root of your c: partition (its a hidden, system file), open it with notepad and it should look something like this: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="thedigitalgod" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT add these two switches: /3GB /PAE (only use the PAE switch if youre on an intel chipset) so it looks like this: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="thedigitalgod" /3GB /PAE /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT save it and reboot. and you can now actually use all of your RAM. the 3GB switch tells windows to allocate 3gb of system memory to programs and leave 1gb for the OS and the /PAE switch allows for more than 4gb to be addressed. technically, only the 3gb switch should be needed, but it seems that my system ran even faster with both the pae and 3gb switches. could be all in my head with the pae, but either way, use the 3gb switch and youll be able to address all of your memory. if youre not comfortable modifying your boot.ini, then dont, cuz if you do it incorrectly you wont be using any of your ram because your system wont boot. windows will still only show that it sees 3gb of ram, but its using all 4. and the commit charge is the total of all ram AND virtual memory in use by all apps, not just ram. enjoy. -shawn |
