Thread Starter | Mac OS X Apple Updates + Pro Tools LE
I've been on 10.4.8 for a long time now.
I have the automatic Software Update turned off, but I have always applied the security updates, airport updates, and general software updates.
iTunes was recently updated to 7.2. That's fine, except it now requires QuickTime 7.1.6 to play video. That would be alright if QT 7.1.6 didn't require OS X 10.4.9 (or 10.3.9 - what the hell is with that? it works with Panther but not Tiger 10.4.8?!).
So I had a day off and I decided to use the combo update and go to OS X 10.4.9. Installed iTunes 7.2 and QT 7.1.6. Now the PT icon bounces 30-50 times before it starts loading, and the loading process is painfully slow. Much, much slower than before.
The loading time of PT didn't change whether it was ver. 7.1.1 or 7.3.1, it was very slow. It didn't just affect Pro Tools either. It bogged down the whole system. Every application's load time was much higher, and once the apps were loaded they seemed to respond slower.
I reinstalled 10.4.8 from scratch and ran the general software updates and airport update and then installed iTunes 7.2 and QT 7.1.5 (the last version of QT for OS X 10.4.8) but I still ran into the same problem, as Pro Tools takes forever to load. This was on 10.4.8, so it isn't a 10.4.9 issue.
I reinstalled 10.4.8 again from scratch (yes, I'm suicidal now), and turned off the software update and didn't install ANY updates whatsoever after the 10.4.8 install. Then I installed iTunes 7.0.1 but did NOT update QT to version 7. Now I can't view video in iTunes or any video from the iTunes store. I can live with that, but I don't see why I have to.
I cannot find a version of QT prior to 7.2 anywhere. It's like apple doesn't want you to have it. They are forcing people to update to 10.4.9.
I have it narrowed down to iTunes/QT 7.2, Java 5 release 4, AirPort update, or one of the iLife updates.
Does anyone know which update is causing this?
Also, does anyone have a QT v7 installer (pre-7.1.5) for mac?

Hilariously, almost all of the updates are causing it - not jointly, but severally. OSX 10.4.9, QuickTime and the two or three most recent security updates all break Pro Tools.
If you had installed just one, fixed it, then installed the next (say you went to 10.4.9 then later went to QT 7.1.6) you'd have the same problem.
Try downloading & running this and see if it solves your problem, it's been working for a lot of other people.

Well I have it sussed out as I'm back to a clean install of 10.4.8 with zero updates. No more updates for me, ever.
And here I thought "Oh it's just an iTunes & QT update, no harm no foul."
Never again!

Yeah, that's the religion of Digidesign, don't update anything until they tell you it's OK.
10.4.10 is on its way, hopefully that will fix things, because it's also a little bit ridiculous that we're left to these OS versions that are full of security holes if we want to use Pro Tools.
In my experience I've found that iTunes is always a safe update, but that OS versions, security updates and Quicktime updates should be done with extreme caution. Basically, just wait a few weeks and check out the DUC and see if anyone's bitching en masse about major problems.

I assumed it was only for people using 10.4.9, and I hate incompatibility issues on computers and I just wanted to get back to my stable, loving DAE.
If it would fix the issue that would be great, but I'm not mentally prepared to reinstall everything again if it doesn't. |

| It will be another 3-6 months after it's released before Digi approves it. Quote: |

| Thanks for the info. I have 7.0.1 installed and everything is working just like it should, so I see no reason to update anything at this point. I guess I can update iTunes to 7.2 but it's working fine now. I'm much more keen on having PT operate smoothly on this computer than anything else.
I think I'll stay here...

I just thought the security updates would be "safe." |

But if you don't need the DRM-free EMI tracks, don't bother!

Yea, you'd think a security update would be safe!
