Thread Starter | Interesting review of reaper in june sound on sound magazine.
Its nice to see sound on sound do a review of this nature. looks well balanced. i feel after this review a lot more people are going to take this product very seriously and realise its makeing a big impact in the world of daw software. if anyone wants to see the review , there is a link i notice via the cockos.com web site to sound on sound. if someone hasnt tried this nice multitrack program, i would suggest they see if it meets their needs. cos there is so much to like, and all i can say is i'm very happy with it.

Manning1 is a very loyal guy. That's why I'm thinking he still has a soft spot for PowerTracks, too!

It's true, it has some great things about it. If a recordist is mostly audio-centric and has only very minimal MIDI needs, it's a great app. I particularly like the easy ability to do varispeed-type effects, the routing, parts of the design philosophy, and particularly the way some of the automation is handled...there's a lot to recommend it. On the other hand, if a person requires more from their MIDI, and of course that "more" is something each person needs to define for themselves, Reaper can be quite disappointing, at least at this point in its evolution. It certainly was for me. I also found various builds to be buggy and not wanting to play nice with various plugins, causing crashes, etc. It's true I could've gone to the forum and posted problems and found workarounds (God knows, the folks on the forum have many many workarounds for these issues), and I could have gotten feedback from Justin and worked at the various problems...but you know what? I don't want to go through the beta test process with the developer, I have work to do and it needs to get done. I tried Reaper for a solid month, and though I was impressed with much of it, when I went back to Cubase SX3 I found my entire being just sighing with relief. The plugs that crashed Reaper were rock solid with SX3, etc., etc., etc. I was able to do my work. Reaper is a good app, maybe at some point it will be a great app, but that point isn't here yet, at least for me. I'm glad I bought a registration and put my money into its "development fund." But it has a ways to go before it reaches workhorse stability, as far as I'm concerned. Cheers. |

EDIT: I have since reinstalled Reaper and love it! Much more stable, which has allowed me to properly check out the program. Great stuff. | |

Yeah, I'm an example -- haven't had any problems with it, don't use a lot of plugs to begin with and don't use MIDI very much. I prefer it over Sonar 6, which is too bloated and convoluted for my needs. Some things that it can do that Sonar 6 cannot, and which are important to me: 1) bussing within the app., itself, (i.e., inter-track routing with the ability to record on the destination track) without having to use mixer (soundcard or hardware) channels to route audio. See Ableton Live, as well. Also, 2) the ability to add/remove FX while the audio engine is running, even while I'm recording is very useful to me. A minor hiccup is negligible (and editable) compared to how much more smoothly an improvisation/performance goes. Last, I thought Larry Crane's seemingly snobby (and pro-Pro Tools) dismissal of REAPER in the latest Tape Op's letter section, was irritating and alienating. |

| "That sounds like a great solution for you Jeff, and REAPER looks pretty cool, but try telling a potential client for your commercial studio that you don't have Pro Tools and that they need to use "REAPER" instead." I think you have issues if you were irritated and alienated by Larry's response. He acknowledges the program by printing the letter and giving a nod to it being cool. Larry isn't a snob, come on! |
