i use the strings from the kontakt 2 library - the one that comes with it.
it has 5 possibilities per tone (sustained, downstroke, pizzicato etc.) and they sound very real!
have a short listen to www.myspace.com/diynamicmusic - feuervogel
my new record - the trumpets and strings are from kontakt.

the most important thing in all string-librarys is, that you have different samples - means playing styles! and of course you need good multisampling...
hope that helps a little bit (and sorry for the advertising) thumbsup

Kirk Hunter has new Virtuoso Strings in various prices/configsfor the EXS24 and yes it is large. Also is his Emerald library.

The question isn't really one of how many DVDs it comes on...that could just be variety. But, that 1.6 G5 and how much RAM? That will be your bottleneck I think.

It also depends on what kind of string sounds you want. I've got an East West lib that will run with no issues on your machine--big sections...overly lush kinda thing. Then I've got dan Dean Solo strings for just that-dry solo samples w/keyswitched articulations...I've run it on less machines under EXS24. But, what I've been wanting is a small section samples. I've got solo and "big" handled between software and hardware. So, I just ordered a copy of the VSL Chamber Strings, which was made for Gigastudio and EXS24. I haven't gotten it yet...but, it's discontinued now. They've moved to their own plug in engine "instrument". And THAT...is a major resource sucker from what I read.

So...what you're looking for, amount of RAM, and how much you want to spend are the defining factors, IMO.
