Angry Shocked by a bug in Cubase Studio 4

Hello,

I just want to share a bug that caused a loss of a recording... I've just upgraded my copy of Cubase to 4.0.3 and now have a problem that is not just annoying, but catastrophic. I was recording a friends concert with a 4 mic setup, running into my focusrite saffire 26IO sound card, plugged into a PC laptop (Acer Centrino Duo) and found that as soon as you click onto any other track within cubase it dis activates recording channels randomly. So your there clicking onto say channel 4 to put the volume up and as soon as you click - channel 1 stops recording, even though on the mixer the record button at the bottom says it is recording.... My asumtions with all recording gear is that when a red light is on a channel and the transport has the recording light lit it means it IS recording....

Has anyone else experienced such problems as this??

You should call Steinberg tech support. Their phone number can be found on www.steinberg.net

I don't think that is a confirmed bug. it may be a setting.

Yea, it's not a bug, it's a feature ;-)

Same for "enable solo on selected tracks"

So... wait a second.

If you click into another track while you're recording it DISARMS recording in the currently recording tracks -- but leaves the red recording "light" on on the track as it rolls along and the transport rec light on as well?

'Cause that's what he's saying happened.

The chorus is a little weak... I think it needs more lasers.

Rarely can you be so certain that what a person's saying is fact. There is an auto select feature in Cubase that will automatically record enable channels when selected. This doesn't over-ride recording.

While I'm sure he is honest in his belief in the facts as described; I don't think this is a known bug. Sometimes, as tough as it may be to admit, user error is the better explaination.

I use 4.03 in my studio everyday for 8 hrs at a time. No such problem. Check the settings and then call Steinberg if you need tech support.

This is not a known "bug."

Agreed it sounds like the problem you had was due to this. Once your in preferences look under 'editing' & select 'project & mixer' to untick it. This should solve your problem.

Yes - this is what i found was happening - only in the mixer window - i thought it could be a setting or something for the auto select record tracks - but to arm tracks to record then by selecting other tracks in the mixer window to disarm recording (but not show the track as disarmed in the mixer window - only in the arrange window)

Its Monday now - so can get hold of the tech support people - and will update the board with any new developments.

(ended up installing a cracked copy of sx3 for yesterdays recording session as couldn't Studio 4)

Cheers for all your responces,

Peter

Well 4.03 is a beta hotfix for issues with direct monitoring in 4.02. Steinberg site only suggests upgrading to 4.03 if 4.02 is not working for you reguarding direct monitoring. Install to 4.02 and see if you have the same issue. Then we know it is likely a beta bug of 4.03.

Well, that's why I said "'Cause that's what he's saying happened" -- rather than "'cause that's what happened..."

In fact, I almost wrote "'Cause that's what he seems to be saying happened."

Anyhow... tiny point. You're right that it's easy even for us sharp-eyed techno-mavens (and I'm including all of us, there) to misunderstand how something is supposed to work... heaven knows it happens to me enough with unfamiliar software. (Just ask me next time I'm doing something I haven't done before in Flash!)

Steinberg told me directly that there were other fixes other than the direct monitoring one that were fixed in 4.0.3 that were not listed on the site. I called because Cubase would crash after 2 minutes everytime I opened a new project and started punching in and out on 4 or more tracks. They told me to update to 4.0.3 hotfix. It worked for me and I CAN'T get it to crash no matter how hard and fast I punch in and out. Although I have talked to others who say that 4.0.3 was worse for them once installed.
