music networking site like MySpace that doesn't re-compress files?

i am aware of MySpace and PureVolume.com.
i upload my songs there at 192kbps but they do further bit reduction and as we all know that makes the songs sound like crap.
is there a site that allows for at least 192kbps mp3s and is free?

thanks!

virb.

like myspace w/o the suck. let me know if you need an invite. they only allow a certain number of people to register everyday w/o an invite. chances are you won't need one but if you do PM me.

You can also plug your own player in at MySpace, if you have a website somewhere to serve the mp3s and the Flash mp3 player from.

It's not entirely intuitive but this player is free, you don't kneed the Flash authoring tool or anything else to use it (except some web space of your own, besides MySpace) and it's really pretty powerful and customizable:

Flash MP3 Player

To use it on MySpace or other sites that don't let you use javascript, look for the Embed section in the README.

(There's a video player and a slide-show/ad-rotator, too.)

On the free music hosting front, there's SoundClick, which allows virtually unlimited hosting at 128 for free or higher bitrates for subscribing artists.

There's also music.download.com (from CNET), which features 192 kbps only, but may be limited to a certain number of songs. And www.mp3.com (new management, also from CNET) has started taking indie musicians again. I have no idea if there are limits. I think I have one song up for old time's sake but, IIRC, there was something dumb about it all... I dunno.

thanks guys, i just uploaded 10 songs to virb.com..... (see sig.)
i don't know if there is no compression going on there though....
the files do sound re-compressed to me, but i will have to listen carefully again.

theblue1, i will check out those other sites and try them out.
i do have a Broadjam page but no-one seems to go there (to Broadjam) other than musicians; we'll see how virb works out!

thanks!

I just dowloaded a free flash player and plonked that on the page instead.
Meant I could have more than 4 songs and not worry about myspace mysuck(tm) compression.
This way I could just encode to 320kps 44 khz, which sounds fine.

The player I got from myflashfetisch.com, which also provides you with a link where you can get some free space to host your mp3's.
Took me about 30 minutes to set it all up, and it works.
www.myspace.com/jorisdeman

(now if I could only get the page itself to look at least semi-decent:P)

Cheers,

Joris
