Digi 003 vs Digi 002/Black Lion

Hello slutz. I'm probably going to do the DigiDesign hardware upgrade, and trade in my currently dust-collecting 001 for an 003 rack, which will cost $795. Does anyone think I should buy a used 002 and get the Black Lion mod instead? Anyone done a shootout between the 003 and 002?

$800 for a new 003 seems like a pretty sweet deal... Any thoughts?

I know Black Lion are getting rave reviews, but if it was me I'd go with the 003. Not that I know which sounds best, but because I really wouldn't like to mod my soundcard/interface.

I just had the same decision to make about a month ago.
I went with the 003 and will get the BLA mod when it is available

but its been almost a month and I still dont have the 003.
It seems GC never ordered the damn thing and now they are filling back orders and im getting the run around from GC.

my thought was that the 003 will be supported longer so get the new stuff and have the mod done.

I've heard nothing but rave reviews about the BLA mods on the 002. But think about this, the 003 has newer, upgraded converters and pres (quieter, and higher dynamic range). Therefore, when BLA comes out with mods for the 003...ur looking at 003-BLA > 002 BLA.

check with the guys on the DUC - but personally i would say get a 002 with a blacklion mod.

only thing is digi will eventually phase the 002 out which means no new software!

Can you imagine if PT 7.8 or something like that, comes with PDC... but only available for 003 & Mbox2 Pro users ?

I just got a 002 thinking about the BLA MOD.

But now that i have it, i think more and more about this.

I have a bad feeling. I know DIGI is going to HURT me with this.


GOD please, don't make this happen i want my OO2 with PDC some day.

Go for it. It's well worth it. Plus it sounds 17x better (scientifically & unequivocally tested) than the 003.

Digi will hurt you, yes, but not by adding PDC. What will happen is that eventually PT software will stop supporting the 002. The last page in the saga of the 001 was PT 6.4. However, the 003 & the 002 are essentially identical, so I see no reason for Digidesign to stop supporting the 002 as long as they support the 003. However, they could do it anyway, just to hurt you, Roberto. I know they have a "thing" against you.

Is digi doing any 002 trade ins towards 003s? Not that I want to trade in my 002 but it would be interesting to see what Digi would offer for an 002 upgrade to an 003...

No, because the 003 is not meant to replace existing owners 002, it's a replacement for the 002 for those who have yet to buy one.

Im looking on Digi's website and the cheapest I see for trading in the 002 for the 003 is $1,100. Where are you guys getting these 400-800$ values??

Any idea as to how much extra it costs if i upgrade from the 002 mixer to the 003 rack?

I would and did trade the 001 in for the 003 console + MPTK. Best use of $1600 in the DAW realm for 001 users. Some of the tradeins include the MPTK at half-price, which I highly recommend.

This is from the Digidesign Website and I would assume this applies to any Digidesign or M-Audio product.

I finally took advantage of the 003 hardware exchange promo. It's great..controls and unit feel higher quality...sounds cleaner as well. I'm not going to lie, I'm probably extra satisfied because of the great deal I got through the promo...

if they phase out the 002 after it's modded would we be able to use it as an all in one preamp/converter into an 003 or other piece of hardware via s/pidf or ADAT?

I'm sure this is a really old thread...

I just had to say that Digi will not stop supporting the 002 any time soon. The only reason the 001 went away was that PCIe slots were replacing PCI. If the 002 goes so will the 003, as they are both Firewire based.

I have the 002R with Black Lion mods and it does sound better than stock, for sure. If you want all your pres in one box, the new 003+ has eight. If your pres and convertors are external its all academic.

This thread seems very old, but I wanted to see if someone could clarify something for me. If I go on ebay and buy a Digi 001 used for under $50 , can I do the Digidesign Exchange Promotion for the 003? It'll save me lots of money.

Has someone done this in the past that has experience?

I guess so, but you should make sure that the seller does a transfer os ownership so Digidesign knows you're the owner.

I emailed BLA asking if a modded 002 or a modded 003 sounded better, and they said they prefer the sound of a modded 002, so I went with that.

No, they just said they "prefered" it... since I already had a 002, I was just happy I didn't need to sell it and get a 003.

Maybe this is the wrong thread to post this comment but why on earth did Digidesign decide not to have smux so you can work on 8 channels at 96KHz?

Any contemporary product, certainly by a self-declared industry leader such as Digidesign, should not be limited to 48 KHz these days.

Or is it just me.............?
