Very basic Mac question

Hi -- recently switched from the WinPC world to an iMac, which I'm quickly outgrowing.

I remember when I first booted said iMac, I was given the option to connect another Mac and port its content to the new one. I gues my question is, if I get a MacPro and connect it to my iMac, will it port all my software and their attendant authentications automatically, or will it only move my documents?

Hope I'm being clear

Thanks for any help!

Dan

you can hook up the two with a firewire cable and boot the imac in target disc mode, the new copmuter will esentially see it as an external hard drive, i think that's probably the best way to do it.

You're probably thinking of the Migration Assistant? You'll find it under Applications/Utilities..

Don't know or think it will clone everything. For that purpose check out SuperDuper:

I recently switched from a G4 iBook to a MacBook. I got the same prompt, connected up my G4, and everything was just like I had left it on my old machine. All my software authentications are in place from what I can tell and my software runs great. My major DAW is not UB, so I can't really put it though its paces yet, but it does boot. My plugs do boot in GarageBand though. Couldn't be easier.
