Sampling a Piano Library

I'm a pop music producer and thinking about producing sample libraries that sounds realistic with performance faults, and is useful in pop mixes, as opposed to something that sounds perfect on its own. What features and type of sound is important to you in a piano library? How important is mono capability? How important is natural room reverb, or completely dry samples?

Good ideathumbsup . There are a few piano libraries that sound great, but anything that would give it some kind of odd character would be nice. For example the possibility to detune certain keys or octaves, bad hammers, disfunctional mechanics, pedal squeaks etc. In my view ambience is great, provided you have the option of turning it off.

having lots of velocity layers at high sample rates! that means lots of HD space.

i guess for pop piano, which usually is recorded dryer than classial and solo piano. u dont need a lot of room sound... not a big room sound conerto style but a small tight space u can add fx reverb if u need to instead of starting with lots of reverb.

if u use kontakt2 u can add some chord memorizer/arp/seq and other performace oriented patches.

Maybe you'll think that I don't answer your question, but I think it will be hard to beat the quality of the sampletekk piano kits that are, to my mind, far better than the ivory and the grand 2 in a mix.

check that, and work on your sample kit if those one doesn't fit to your pop production ;-) the close miked kit is worth is price ! 50$. don't know what to say.

http://www.sampletekk.com/proddetail.php?prod=STCD-033

this one is a Yamaha C7 grand with No less then 93 unique samples per recorded note.
It's awesome to make pop ballades or rn'b if you think the steinway is too jazzy and not enough bright.

this Steinway D kit is the most detailed and realistic that I have ever heard:
http://www.sampletekk.com/proddetail...TCD-003-MULT24

http://www.sampletekk.com/bgresource.php to download the demo ( 2 octaves + all the C's)

the close miked version is only 50$ for pop its perfect. You can add reverb if desired.

Hope it will be fine for you.

well I ended up making the piano library- it took quite some time, and I used it on quite a few tracks... Now I finished making a website for it last month and it's available here:

Matt - this is amazing! I read your first post and thought "this guy's nuts if he thinks he can just up and do this." Haha, then a few posts later and you've gone and done it!

The samples on your web site sound superb! I can't really afford it now, especially since I just recently invested in the Reason piano samples, but just wanted to pass some kudos your way. I'll definitely keep an eye on the site!

- I agree, the samples sound great. A very intimate and warm vibe.

Yeah - being that it's Christmas time too makes it hard to spend on new software toys for oneself.

How about a GS groupbuy?

Hi autocrat, interesting idea. What do you mean by 'GS'?

If you're talking about GigaStudio, this instrument is only currently available in Kontakt and EXS24. Other formats are planned, but my polls show that not many people that actually still use Giga -

do correct me if I'm wrong!

Come on people - hop on board, this is a terrific opportunity to buy some great sounds at a great price!

Matt, quick q: are you extending the group buy across other forums as well, or is it only based on what GS members purchase?

This is great. I bought the Standard version when it came out. It's fantastic. I am happy that you included the upgrade path to the Pro version in this Group Buy.

I'm in.

Thought it made sense to mention this Group Buy in the "New Products" alert/rumor section.

Hi Yelmua,

At first it was just intended as a Gear Slutz group buy, but it since seems it has extended to other forums, I have no problem with that.

Thanks,

Matt

Does imperfect mean there are variations for the „same“ sample, or did I misinterpret?

Sounds really nice by the way

Gotta ask my wallet what it thinks on another music-related investment…

Just thought I'd update this thread, as I've just finished a new instrument:

The Hohner White Baby Grand

It has 3 mic perspectives, and 34 velocity layers in each.. all imperfectly sampled of course!
