Thread Starter | Sonar 6 Audio Snap - is it just me or.....
is no one using this function to edit multi track drums a la Beat Detective. I posted this question on the Sonar forum and the consensus seems to be that it is OK on loop tracks but not so good at real multi track drums. That kind of sucks, I thought there was finally a legitimate alternative to BD. Anyone else having any luck using Audio snap for multi track real drums ?

I've used it on single tracks, like tamborines and hand claps, and it works like a charm. Haven't tried it on multi track drums yet, though I plan to play around with it soon. I'd imagine it could work quite well, with a little trial and error, but as I said, havent tried yet...

Maybe I have to play with it some more but I couldn't get it anywhere near where I needed it. I posted on Sonars sight just to see if anyone else had sucess and apparently there aren't too many people using it to 'fix' real multi track drums. The replies from people who had actually tried to use Audio Snap on Multi track drums were not all that favourable. Let me know if you have any sucess. Based on the limited time I have spent with Sonar I REALLY like that DAW alot. It's disappointing that they don't have automatic delay compensation for external hardware yet. I also four UAD cards and apparently there are issues getting those to work with Sonar, they will need to fix that at some point. |

[rant] If you want drums on the grid just buy a freakin' drum machine. I'm sorry... as someone who has spent 26 years with drum machines and put in a lot of years recording real drummers this business of moving drummers to the grid really makes me crazy. I used to use all kinds of tricks to make drum machines sound more natural. The notion of taking a real drummer and making him sound like a lifeless robot just strikes me as... odd. [/rant]

I've been using Cakewalk since version 2.0, synching it to Turtle Beach Quad, and have just stuck with it. It's come a loooong way since those days, and Sonar is now pretty formidable DAW software. Still, it has it's problems, and some really silly behavior that just makes me say WTF!?

there are quite a few options on audiosnap... i guess if you mess with it it will work for what you want... in sonar 6.2 i've changed completely my way of working with the program... i especially like the enable tabbed for views and plugins... it changed the way i work and made it faster... but it's a little harder to master than previous versions of the program... it is a very vast and very complex DAW. i like it... |

I've used Audiosnap for small things like stretching out a backup vocal that was not long enough. I tried to apply it to drums, but honestly, even after watching the videos and reading the tutorials, it is still quite difficult to grasp. There are times when it seems like I just can't get it to do what I want, or I'll click "ok" and see a flicker, but can't really perceive any difference or there will be areas that just don't sound right. Also, it is just so damn time consuming to do that kinda crap, that I'd rather invest time in a few extra takes than waste 8 hours snapping drums. Even after applying what seems like all the correct settings, I still have to go through the entire track with a fine tooth comb to catch little bad spots here and there. This wouldn't be a problem normally, but when you have Audiosnap engaged, even moving 4 bars ahead in the song makes the program choke like it's going to crash. Even perfecting just one song, if it has lots of issues, will take some serious time. Then once you're done, you'll want to do an offline bounce so you can un-engage Audiosnap and end the choke-fest. Better grab a sandwich, read a book, or take a fvckin nap cuz it's going to take a WHILE. I'm glad I have the option to do Beat Detective-type editing, but I think they need to optimize it a bit so it doesn't behave so stuttery and erratic.
