Unhappy NEWBIE NEEDS PC SOFTWARE ADVICE

HELP!!!
Can anyone tell me if I can do any recording with Windows XP Media 2004 as my OS?? I have a new laptop, and I'd love to run Protools or Cakewalk, but what info I've found says they're only compatible with XP Home or Pro. Thanks in advance for the help!!
