Mbox 2 Mini - anyone using it?

Will be buying a Digidesign "dongle" soon and was wondering if anyone can report on the merits of the new Mini?

How is the D/A section + headphone amp? Passable? Perhaps even halfway decent? Inputs don't worry me, won't be using them (that's what you always think!). Might spring for the regular Mbox 2 to benefit from the digital outs, but if the Mini is good enough for picky editing/sound design it is both cheaper and smaller. Would've gone for the Mbox 1, but it's no option for other reasons (special offer attatched to buying a new Digidesign interface).

Thanks!

I recently got an MB2 Mini so I could do "lite" editing and mixing away from the studio with my laptop. For the most part I like it.

Like you, I don't plan on using it for recording so I can't comment on the the A/D or the preamp. It's just a dongle so I can run PT. Although it's nice that it comes with the Ignition Pack, and the Bomb Factory plugs.

The D/A seems sufficient to me. I don't plan on doing my final mixes with the MB2M so the conversion isn't a big deal. The headphone amp gives me all the gain I need.

I like the fact that it's USB powered. It just makes it that much more convenient and portable.

Glad to hear there's enough gain in the headphone amp. Not too much noise, I hope?

Another, more general question: can you use several Digidesign interfaces and switch without problems? For example: using a 002r at the studio and a Mbox 2 Mini on the road, or swapping the Mini for a Mbox 1 down the road, should I find one (they're usually cheap and do have the digital i/o I could use...)?

I take it the i/o setup would have to be changed depending on the actual session, but I've just never thought about whether this would work or not.

I use my Mini as a dongle for Pro Tools. I do no editing, mixing, or recording in Pro Tools. I only use it to either export or inport projects from other studios. Works fine. You can use any Pro Tools hardware box with the software at anytime.

not so sure about that.... My boss has got a setup with mbox2 in his office, and we tried plugging my 002r and another mbox1 - neither worked right away.
