Time to get a new audio interface. Lowest latency possible?

I am finally able to upgrade my system and am looking for a new audio interface but would like to find something that offers the lowest possible latency for playing live with VST instruments. Previously, I was using a Creamware Luna 2 card and was getting around 7ms at 44.1khz. I'd like to hear suggestions on low-latency 8in/8out interfaces and the smallest buffer settings that you are able to use with your setup.

Some of the interfaces I'm looking at are the RME Fireface 400, M-Audio 410, Echo Audiofire 8, Presonus Firepod, Motu Traveler, Motu Ultralite, Moto 8Pre, and Motu 828. Cheaper is better.

hi there,

you can use RME multiface (8 ins/8 outs) and you can use directmonitoring if you play in with real synths. you can use directmonitoring and you should have "No latency" (no is 2ms.. convertor latency.. like protools HD).

the old multiface with PCI-card goes in the states for about 500$.

I can get my DAW down to 4ms for tracking.. for recording I have to increase the buffersyze due to systemperformance.

cheers George

It depends on your computer to some extent. I have an RME 9652 PCI and when working with the lowest buffer setting at 44.1k (which gave me 1.5ms according to the control panel) the difference between what I could do with my AMD X2 3,800 and my newer Intel C2D E6600 is immense!

In my experience, pci-based interfaces in general have lower latencies. The emu 1616m pci is definitely worth looking in to. There are in-depth threads floating around about emu, but it seems to be on par or better than cards costing 3X more.

Thanks for the replies. I will look into the Emu stuff and keep my eye open for a used multiface.
