Windows Vista to Windows XP

I recently bought an HP Pavilion 1700n with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+. It came pre-loaded with Windows Vista and I want to go back to a clean install of Windows XP SP2.

My question is this: Will I take a performance hit by going back to XP in regards to the dual-core processor? Is vista better suited for running the dual core processor? Will XP run just as well, or, possibly faster?

I really just wanted the machine, NOT VISTA... XP has always worked for me, I just want to know before I transfer my XP license.

Any thoughts?

There are supposedly low level features of Vista that supposedly make use of new features in the latest chip familes.

But -- if I were in your shoes and I could get XP on my machine with no cost -- I'd do it in a second and not look back.

Now that is just me. I do know people who've been running Longhorn and Vista release candidates and like them. But those guys, by and large, are not end users. They're system geeks. A notable exception to that is George Necola, our mostly fearless moderator, who says they've had Vista machines running with the "advanced" features like DRM and the rescaling 3D graphics engine turned off and it runs fast... so... you know.

Vista's day will come...

For me that is... some day.
