I am getting some pretty good gear going in my home studio, from an API A2D, Germanium, as well as some nice mics like the Telefunken AK -47. The things I don't really have are nice equalizers, compressers, limiters etc.. I of course would love to go out and buy the best there is, but can't really afford it. But if I get a nice sounding plug in bundle like the U.A stuff would that be just as nice sounding? Those U.A plug ins are not cheap and go for around 600 -1000, but I couldn't get 1 nice hardware compresser for that price, much less all the other stuff. What's your take on this? I've heard a lot of good things on the U.A stuff, and realize that there are a boatload of plug ins that don't sound as good as the real deal. Just hoping the U.A stuff is different.

i prefer to compress, eq & limit in the computer & save the outboard gear budget for good sound capturing & generation.

I agree, get some good mics, pres and converters. Maybe add a compressor or two as you can budget it. EQ and compress ITB.

Well I think I have some good mic pres in the API and Chandler Germanium., and the A2D is already a converter, so I'm covered there.

my advice would be to get a good outboard compressor and then use plugin EQs.
a distressor might be a good fit.
