2gig Ram or 4 gig Ram in XP pro

Hi all,

The question:

Is it worth putting 4 gig of Ram (instead of 2 gig) in a Core Duo E6700, running XP pro and Cubase SX 2.

The Background:

I'v been happily using a P4 2Ghz, 512meg, XP Pro, SX2 with the usuall VSTi's (NI, spectrasonics, Korg ect) and plug-ins (waves, TC ect) For about 6 years. Now i know that this is a really out dated system, but it was (untill recently) doing everything that i wanted and it never crashes.

I'v started to notice that all the new VSTi are really eating away at the processor and have become a lot more sample based. Im starting to run into problems when loading lots of kontakt lirarys and BFD ect

So i'v decided to get a Core Duo E6700 base unit. Im just undecided as to go for 2 Gig or 4 Gig or Ram. I dont see the point of paying out more money if XP pro cant address and use 4 gigs. Im planning on using lots of sample based VSTi, audio tracks and audio plug-ins, And im sure that if its possible to max out the processor/memory i will. So any answer should hopefully be based on weather the computer performance will see any advantage with 4 gig instead of 2 gig.

I still plan on using SX2.

I also don't plan on moving over to vista (not for a while anyway).

Hope this is enough background.

Thanks in advance,

T

I would get 2 gigs of smokeing fast ram with a mother board to support it

over 4 gigs of slow ram with a cheesy mother board.

OVER clock it and your ram should run as fast as your front side bus.

Ive heard the the duo 2 clock nice with a good mobo. they have mother boards

that only over clock when you need the extra speed. dont you love PC ,

lets see Mac do that .

I'm not sure that XP will make use of anything over 2GB of RAM (I think it does something strange like run the RAM slower if there is more than 2GB present). If you have 2GB then you can disable virtual memory in XP which will probably improve performance noticeably. If your machine has been stable I'd imagine upgrading from 512 would be a worthwhile investment. The difference between 1 and 2 GB is very noticeable.

With the 3Gb switch it is possible to make use more than 2GB. But i think your software need to be large memory aware. Some of them are, some of them not.

any time you add more RAM it takes longer for the system to look through

the RAM . thats why you get fast RAM. 2 gigs of fast RAM would out perform

4 gigs of stock RAM in every way. correct me if Im wrong im not a geek.
