protools and garageband

so. i have been approached by a band to mix some stuff they have recorded. the issue i am having is their files are all in garageband. i do not own garageband, just protools le. I am curious to know what I can tell them, or what I might be able to do to get those files importable for protools.

any ideas??

HAHAHA!! Yeah, good idea. I must start doing things like that.

As for perhaps a more realistic option, just get them to solo each track in Garageband and set up the loop points for the entire duration of the track, and then export each track to iTunes (I wish Apple would just include a NORMAL export function) and then get them to burn all the tracks as data onto a disc for you.

Just make sure that the export all the individual tracks from zero so yu can line them up quickly and painlessly. Maybe also get them to mute any FX they may have added if you dont want/require them.

Also note that (AFAIK) Garagebnd only exports to 16/44. It will import 24 bits fine without scaling the bitrate down, but the exports always seem to be at 16/44.

Good luck.

GarageBand song files are actually OS X 'packages".

Control Click on the song file file and select 'Show Package Contents' from the popup, and you will see any audio files contained within the song.

You can then copy them out to another location and import into Pro Tools.

Any loops or MIDI would have to be rendered or recreated.

Thanks for that info!

I'm thinking it could happen that I have to deal with some GB tracks in the not too distant future and that's a great thing to know, especially for a darkside denizen like myself.

I missed that!

Welcome to GearSlutz....

Just remember... if you're browsing from your dayjob or at the church you do sound for... when they look over your shoulder and see you looking at a thread called "Show me your rack!" at a place with the word Slutz in its name... you better be quick to show them a picture of someone's rig. Audio rig, that is.
