Musicial creation in dreams

This morning I created what I'm very certain was a pop masterpiece entirely in my head while I was still asleep. But when I woke up I quickly forgot most of it except for the basic melody and a very small part of the lyrics.

So I'm obviously a lyrical genius while I am sleeping, but how can I translate this into actual songwriting hits? Is there a easy way to remember stuff like this after you awake?

Many people sleep with a voice recorder or notepad by the bed.
It's really quite common.

I think it's a good idea to write down your dreams on a notepad. That way you train yourself to remember. The times I wrote something down that way it stuck with me forever. In case of melodies, yes, it's probably best to record. Or even better, learn to write it out as sheet music. That way you can get the harmonies as well. Melodies are quite often nonsensical without the harmonies. Of course, this requiers a real skill. I couldn't pull this off well enough.

You might want to look into "Lucid Dreaming"
Lucid dream - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I used to be able to do this on a regular basis, and your awake state stays with you a bit longer than a 'normal' dream. Just heed the recorder/notepad idea. this might give you an extra minute of rememberence.

Alas, there are actual techniques to try and train yourself to lucid dream, if you've never experienced one, it's quite sweet. Control comes with practice... i've not tried the training techniques, but lucid dreaming is a very real thing.

Add "Techniques" to your search for suggestions.

Don't count out the possibility that it may have been a masterpiece only in your dreams... Just a thought.

That said, notepads are essential next to the bed.

I was thinking that.

But damn it sounded so pro, like something that could easily be a Katy Perry hit.
