Thoughts about the Lewis CK Model...

some thoughts about lewis CK experiment.

Just because Lewis CK's show didn't get pirated doesn't mean that it won't be in the future. It's short sighted to think that any model can't be pirated, or won't be.

I like the Lewis CK Model for Touring Bands. Sell live streams for say $5. Of every show on the tour. Great value add, not the same as being there, and innovative use of technology. But what if pirates learn how to hack the stream and give it away for free? Would that be fair to the band just because someone figured out how to steal from them should we allow them to do it?

Let's look at the Superbowl. CBS has paid a fortune for the exclusive right to air the show. That exclusivity allows CBS to change a lot for the advertising. Should FOX, ABC, NBC and any other outlet be able to broadcast and stream it without paying for the rights to do so?

No matter how you slice it, theft is theft. It is unfair competition to take something that someone else paid to create and to profit from it without the rights to do so.

I don't think it's that it didn't get pirated, rather it's that a lot of people paid money.

I think the Louis CK model works better because he put it out himself.

So people want to support him. They don't look at it like a label.

It's like going to a show and buying the t-shirt. You know the band is getting the money.

I think the problem is that most indie bands play in shithole places with no internet connection ( or a very slow basic one, not suitable for transmitting a reliable audio/video stream of quality ).
Louis CK is already pretty much a big celebrity. He probably tours in decently equipped places.

Very very true. It's a perception thing. Most people just assumes ( or want to, cause it takes away the guilt ) that musician=evil major label , so "we're only stealing from the label , not the musicians".
Nobody cares whether you're indie/DIY or not, before hitting the Download button on Megaupload.
