I saw in the news a while back that some YouTube star got busted for pretending to be independent while she had been signed by a major label all along.

Just noticed this other girl - 17 year old girl has an unreal voice, but also tours Japan, has great recordings and amazing video quality for someone who is "unsigned" according to her Facebook page (that has a whopping 400,000 likes btw) https://www.facebook.com/MeganNicoleSite?sk=info

SO I looked up about 10 of the artists (on wikipedia) that she covers and ALL of them are either signed on a label owned by Universal, or on a label like Hollywood (owned by Disney) that is distributed by Universal.

BUSTED! How often does this happen???

How often do labels lie or how often do musicians lie or how often does their management lie?
The question is more like, WHY do they lie about this in the first place. Do the labels feel like faking brings them the credibility they flushed down the toilet in the last few years (or decades).
Does it happen often? Two words: "Arctic Monkeys" It happens all the time. Don't expect certain people to adhere to any kind of moral code.

I think the business model of using the YouTube medium to connect with that audience and get them to buy covers of your other artists is pretty fricken smart, but what bothers me is her facebook page says 'unsigned', which is clearly just to make the kids feel more inclined to support her. now maybe they technically aren't lying because her deal isn't a normal record deal, but it's pretty ****ing low when it makes all these 13 year old girls say oooo look how hard she's working doing all this by herself, not realizing that this girl could never make her recordings sound this good on her own let alone do some of the good editing that's in a lot of her videos.
