Musician scared of contracts

So there's a new client interested in recording and production. After the initial few emails we're good to go. I inform him that I'll get the studio and production contracts ready... He's worked with multi platinum artists and multi Juno winning artists and has never had to sign anything. Ugh.

Studio contract is the basic protection of gear, payment and injury. Producer contract is ensuring the 2% producer points on all sales. Nothing out the ordinary yet this guy seems spooked. I would suggest forgetting the contracts and just adding something on the upfront cost but maybe that will seem as if I was out for 'blood' to begin with.

Anyone had similar experiences?

Strange he would act like that with the reputed CV he has. At a lower level, some people will email about how ecstatic they are to work with you, then you mention the nitty gritty such as payment, then they balk.

Neither have I. And we never bother to ask clients to sign stuff, unless it's absolutely necessary.

Just tell him straight;

You like doing things legit. Mention that not having a contract is the non-legit way to do things! Say it will cover him as well as you.

If he's still shady, just charge him more and screw the contract.

Thanks for the input. It may not be standard for everyone in every situation but it's the way I like to go forward. Especially when it comes to production and songwriting.

With this guy I scrapped the contract and charged extra. He was ok with that.
