How to get into music for film?

This is a very novice question, but when i was at college and university we had a lot of modules on music for film, which was a part of the course i really enjoyed.

I have briefly looked up how to get into this, and its usually paying to become a member of somthing to maybe get a chance of writing for a small time production.

I was wondering wether there were any simular services, but one where you dont have to pay to show somone your ideas and what you can do.

I would really like to get into this area of music,

any suggestions.
