I am allowed to share music files

...but there are a few restrictions.

I am talking only about Germany right now.
Don't say it's not true only because you don't like it or think it's unfair.
It is German law.

Now before you explode in anger you gotta know that I'm writing music that receives public airplay
and also my compositions, pieces and songs are available on torrents etc. and I'm interested in protecting my work.

To inform myself about the law concerning this I recently spoke to and consulted lawyers, all of them experts in the field of copyright (music and other arts).

-If a band or a label offers streamings of their music on myspace or youtube (example) I am allowed to "wrap" the audio or record into my sequenzer,
if I can assume that they hold the rights of the audio (which I can in this case) and there's no explicit warning saying I'm not allowed to.

>German law says: Private use.

-The law goes even further and allowes me to send the file I recorded to all my friends by MSN messenger (example).

>German law still says: Private use.

Hm... not too happy about this. Maybe old news to you, not to me.

Now, torrents are a different thing, we're not talking torrents here.

Fair... not fair?

In Canada it is not illegal to download, only to upload. Our copyright law has not been updated in a decade. Revisions have been brought up repeatedly, but put off each time. Elections have been close in recent years, so I imagine neither party wants to stake their chances on a political football like this by taking any firm stance.

Europe and South-east Asia seem to be very far ahead of us in North America on this so far.
