| Lives for gear | Submitting to Indie Labels
Excuse me if this is off topic Tony! Obviously to submit demo materials to a major label it would have to come from the hands of an established lawyer, manager, the CEO's cousin lol or a channel close to the target. My groups music doesn't quite fit the major label format. I'm interested in submitting to indie labels like a Def Jux, Up Above, Babygrande etc. What do you guys think is the best way to go about this. I know alot of you guys are looking for the major label deals but anyone have insight on this? We do a ton of shows in the North-East, get great response from crowds, some play on college stations etc. Whaddya think?

Yo, To be honest my experience has been about the same when it comes to really established indies. I've been at this quite a while and we just recently started to have some "real" contact with established indies as of late. And that has been because of a mutual friend of ours who happends to also produce a lot of our music got tight with some indie execs doing other business. I think your best bet is try to hook up with someone that has ties to the indie label circuit, like promo people, producers that do a lot of indie work. But this is just my experience, others I'm sure may have some different more concrete suggestions, I hope. You can hit me up if you have any other questions that I might be able to shed a little light on. Sorry for the long post. Also, we used to go to SXSW, that's where you need to be if your trying to get on with the Indies. Best of luck,

truth be told the way the game is right now if your serious your gonna have to pay 1) a lawyer to shop you or 2) a respectable entertainment company to shop you thats the facts |

It sucks, but Affiliated is right. The indie circuit is just as clique-ish as the major circuit and they get flooded with material all the time. We're at a point where we're talking to some people about servicing our album to all the radio outlets, distributors, clothing co's. etc. And the sh!t aint cheap. Plus you can't just get anyone do it, If companies get a package from a source they don't recognize our trust it's getting tossed. So you can't even service your own project. Even if you had all the contacts you run the risk of not even getting a partial listen. Keep doing shows and making music. The shows really help your exposure try to get shows in near by states. Soon enough, people will start to come to you. Rexx, www.IllamentalEntertainment.com www.TripleHelixMusic.com www.Myspace.com/TripleHelixMusic |
