| Gear addict | GAS/ELECTRIC Meter Transponder RFI problem!
So... i found out whats causing humming and problems in my GUITAR/AMP signal/sound! you bet...the new gas and electric meters have RADIO TRANSPONDERS in them so they can be read remotely! Also the gas pipe is steel...and my place has a LOT of piping that steel. which i guess acts like a big broadcasting antenna type thing... If it gets close to the meter, or the steel gas pipe itself....its hell. So i'm wondering if there is ANY sort of RFI shielding used in studios? for the cables from room to room? shield the guitar? the guitar cord? the amp as well? just wondering.... i've heard of some studios using a MESH gobo? thanks Durv |

Before you condemn the gas/electric meters..... Currently, there are two types of remotely read meters. They are RF and AMR. The AMRs have an internal module that sends the data back through the power line. They do not create any interference on the line. The RF types typically transmit the data using low power RF at 800 - 900 MHz. It is highly unlikely that this signal strength, especially at this frequency would cause you any interference. These meters have to go through rigorous testing before being placed in service. I doubt any power/gas company would be using any units that do not comply with current, accepted standards.

I have 3 seperate meters. ONE for gas. and 2 for Electricity. 2 Electric due to my place having been partioned for 2 apts. at one time. At any rate, its actually NOT so much the electric meters... i found trying diferrent areas in the place, and so forth. the further away from the GAS meter, the less interference. i took the guitar and amp to seperate places. friends houses. another studio. same amp. same guitar. exact same knob positions. even rotating poles/facing diferrent bearings. N.E.S.W. the new building i am looking at has the AMR type...which is wonderful. and it is dead quiet there. I also took it to a place that has NO gas meter....dead quiet as well. i'm not so much interested in the "blame" game...but i AM looking for solutions to "how to shield from RF interference". thanks in advance! i forgot to mention the ultimate test. i removed the meters from the box/junction. hardwired it back. highly dangerous i know. and had straight power without the meter in the path. no huming. i didnt mean to sound like i wasnt grateful for your thoughts. Durv |
