Here's another article bemoaning declining music sales, where pretty much everything except the quality of their product is blamed. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061013/...sic_sales_dc_1 Wouldn't you just once, like to see an article like this? Shitty Music Blamed for Declining Sales Despite a raft of new technologies and channels for delievering their products to consumers, music sales continue to decline. Music executives we spoke to cited the shitiness of the music they produce as the main culprit. "The money-lenders are in charge of the temple," one A&R VP told us, "The pressure for each and every release to be commercially successful has forced us to release only artists with proven success or clones of those artists, unless of course, they're hot chicks who are willing to do soft-core porm music videos." Other music executives we spoke to agreed that their music sucks, but we're confident that increased revenue from cell phone product placements in video, ring tones and licensing classic tracks to advertisers would produce enough supplimental income to let them keep their jobs for at least another year. |

I don't think that it's bad music but poor selection. I mean, there's some good stuff coming up and about that are far superior to anything on CMT, MTV, VH1 etc if you took Saves the day vs Squarepusher who's puting out a better product? If you took Maroon 5 vs Taking back Sunday... Under the Influence of Giants vs Paris Hilton They keep sinking money into the projects that SEEM like they're going to make them a fortune but they forget that the listening public actually knows that there's good music out there. I tried to keep all of the examples contemporary as comparing classic rock to modern rock is not fair (though Squarepusher against anything isn't fair) but classic rock has a nostalgia factor that you just can't quanitfy. then again, maybe the album format is dead. Then again, maybe the 3 minute single is just about dead. Are we all going to be mastering for cell phone ring tones in the next 10 years?? |
