"That's a great take! C'mon in let's fix it!" Is "Pro Tool" a verb?

I'm not a veteran in the industry... nor am I a newbie (I've got 13 years of studio experience). I learned on 1" and 2". I worked on Sound Designer, the 2 track version. I work on an SSL. I can align a tape machine. And I can appreciate Pro Tools for every way it can be used. I still use both formats regularly today.

But...

I have recently been put off by artists that assume I am going to "fix" their parts in Pro Tools... furthermore... Sound replace. Granted, I do clean up the drums via com'd takes... and if the parts are off more... then I will beat detect them. But I really want to artist to do the best they can. But I will help (or have Pro Tools help) in order to get through the track in the time we've got.

NOW!

How 'bout these folks that read a lot of articles about how big names do things... & like using beat detective arbitrarily. I got off the phone with this dude (we'll call him Mr. Producer) and he now wants to print a DI of the electric guitars along with our mic'd stuff so we (he) can beat detect them to "tighten them up." He said he read that Green Day did it on American Idiot...

What!

First off... if you have the time (which we do) and the players are qualified (which they are)... why the heck would someone do this. The music is not outragious 64th notes at massive speeds. It is fairly simple pop/rock stuff.

Second... I would be offended as the guitarist to have someone WANT to do this before sessions even start.

Third... I can't imagine that would be accurate with beat detective. but it could be interesting...

AND...

He thinks (rather he says he knows) that TLA & CLA don't use samples with the drum tracks...

ALSO...

Though he wants to do all of this work (editing) to the drums, bass and electric guitars... he refuses to autotune vocals... Where the heck is his line drawn?

AND....

awe hell, I'm through.

any thoughts?

You need to educate your clientel that when the "big acts" get sound-replaced/beat detectived to death it's because they can't play.

You need to explain to them that Pro-Tools is a tape machine with some extra features. Make them understand that playing the part better the first time is much better than editing things on a computer. Explain that the REASON THEY ARE MUSICIANS IS BECAUSE OF EMOTIONS, AND EDITING SHIT TO DEATH TAKES OUT EMOTIONS.

Music is nothing without emotion.

Also explain that a lot of people like to start rumors, and this is why Star magazine has been so sucessful. Point out the paparazi problem. It's all relative.

yes.

pro tools is a verb.

sorry to hear about your next crappy record, but at least your working. i miss the days when bands would play together in the studio and do full takes. we should try and bring that back. it's a novel concept...the band sounding like the band.

hmm.
