Dying platform? I'm seeing signs of new life. If anything, UAD's having babies lately.
1) used in Apollo which is one of the best all-round deals out
2) the plugs are being ported for AAX which is a huge improvement over UAD's life in Pro Tools up to now which has involved large delay times for VST wrapping.
Half empty or half full? I run almost entirely UAD2 plugs and just use native PT10 w/ Aurora converters (use AES card, very important) so my Avid investment is at a minimum. Spent some $$ on an SSD and my system runs WAY faster/smoother than it ever did on my old HD rig... Then again, I don't run film scores or 90 track mixes, etc. Seems anyone who actually needs the power of HD now, and not just a super native rig (heck mine's only on a 2006 mac pro, worth about $400 now) should be making enough money that it's no big deal to get an expansion bay if you need some HDX cards + some UAD2 cards. Then again, maybe it's just cause I can't picture myself mixing HUGE sessions just for fun or a side gig.
