Me: "So come on.. tell me, are these MXL mics just pieces of shit?"

Mr. Salesman: "Sir, when your reach the pro audio level you will realize that mics are like crayons, they all give the special color you may need. We don´t sell bad mics here, just ones with different color."

Me: "You know, not all shit smells the same, could I use that analogy too."

Mr. Salesman: "By a pair sir, you will see a difference in the quality of your recording. They may only cost $x.xx each but they produce a sound that rivals with some of the best mics we sell here. I have a pair in my personel "pro" studio at home."

What a ******.

Granted each of these companies have to sell gear and they are not going to bad mouth any product they sell so you need to get realistic. I must come to the defence of Sweetwater because they got me out of a huge hole several years ago. Long story short, they shipped me a MOTU MTP AV a day prior to a huge session saving my ass. They only charged me for FED EX overnight. My old MTP AV went back to them. No questions asked. Thanks to Sweetwater, I maintained that client who is my #1 client to this day.

Now I also know better that to call them and ask them which is the best mic or pre for a specific task. Its like asking a stupid question, you get a stupid answer.

I don't deny the fact that a lot of people love Sweetwater, but they've pushed me INTO a few holes in my history with them. And I've quite a bit of rude service.

Not Sweetwater or anywhere in the USA for that mtter, But my funny salesman experience is:

I was asking about a pair of overheads pencil mics, my usuall pro audio supplier lets me try stuff myself, so I ask, can I try these in my studio?

Salesman: no, but they are very good at picking up high end

ME: im sure, but I may or may not like them in my room

The salesman then proceds to mic up a big carboard box that has some packing tape sicking out the side, he flicks the tape back and fourth in his fingers and says, see, fanstic high end reproduction.

with that I say to him as I turn to leave, Next time im recording the cardboard box packing tape band, Ill be back for those mics.

I havent had any experience with sweetwater, but they seem to be real dedicated to product support as far as their ads are concerned.

The thing that blows me away about them, is the HORRIDLY overpriced recording PC's. Even the cheapest "creation station" is absurdly priced!! That leads me to think that the poor fool who finally ditches his small saib, trusts them to sell him his first PC for recording?!?!

Thats just wrong.

I quit talking to those guys a while back.I'd rather talk to someone that shoots straight and recomends the right stuff at awesome deals, like Front End Audio or Ozark Pro Av. Buying at those other places remind me of Walmart.

My Sweetwater sales rep [Chuck Surak] has helped my ass out of the fire more than a couple of times... I have nothing bad to say about him nor his operation... in fact, I give them high praise for having helpd my ass out of the fire on more than a couple of occasions when we all know our shop [while a flea standing next to an elephant] is a competitor.

I was personally bummed when Sam Ash bought out Manny's Music and fvcked a bunch of small boutique manufacturers out of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment... but I've never heard any of their sales weasels tell a lie [then again, I've never heard any of their sales weasels speak].

Peace.

ditto, sam rodgers sweetwater/chicago is a champ. if he can't help you out himself, he will put you in direct contact with digi field guy to fix the problem, and if there is time, he will bring them to your studio. plus, sweetwaters very own over the phone tech support dept. will blow out any one you would talk to at digi's phone tech support dept.

digi phone support certianly would'nt be my first choice.

as for buying gear, if your buying a $100 mic or "store" stuff,

go to sam ash or GC, but if your dropping 2 to 100,000 dollars on real gear,
call sam at sweetwater or fletcher. they will love you for it, and make sure you are a happy camper at all times. it just good business and common sense.

Sam Ash is sure as hell I alot better than Guitar Center. I just got a real sweet deal on one of those U.A Solo 610's on Friday, and believe me they DID NOT have to do that. I have had nothing but good things to say about Sam Ash. thumbsup

I bought my SM-7b and my Masterlink from Sweetwater for full price, I didn't ask or want a discount either. It was pretty cut and dry. I could have gotten it from a dealer at a wholesale discount, but I would have rather put it back into the industry's pocket.

Biggest bullshit I've heard is you asking for opinion instead of listening and buying what you think sounds good.

I worked in two studios, both bought around 50K, no problems from Sweetwater, GREAT support! Great people! Sam Ash is some other thing, I think Sweetwater is not in that category.

I've worked for two or three years with two different sales guys at Sweetwater and they've both been very straightforward and helpful.

I had an experience with Sweetwater which could have gone very bad, but they made it right. I bought $12k of ProTools boards from them plus an audio PC to put them in. The PC turned out to be defective: two of three fans were broken, so that temperatures were high enough to cause audible defects in the audio. Took a long while to figure out what was happening, because of the particular way in which the problem manifested itself. Once I was able to demonstrate what was happening, Sweetwater replaced the PC *and* the ProTools boards with brand new ones, which is to say, they ate about $14,000. Hard to argue with that kind of customer loyalty.

Nice Fletcher.

I also stand 100% behind Sweetwater. They are great at what they do, and every experience I've had with them has been exactly what I expected and more.

I think bashing Sweetwater ranks right up there with stealing money from the homeless.

Sam Ash on the other hand....

Good retailers recognize when a client knows what they want.

Being good retailers, they don't bullsh&t in that situation.

In other situations, all bets are off, and buyer beware...Welcome to the jungle.

Interestingly enough, I've always heard the most bullsh*t and experienced the worst customer service from small, ma-and-pa instrument stores. I always want to give these places a chance, but they usually let me down early.

I've always had good experience with Sweetwater. Guitar Center's a little more iffy, but you can usually single out the dorky salespeople quickly; the ones left over are usually cool enough. I will say that GC has never refused me a sales return.

me: im looking for a device such as this, or a similer solution for my needs
salesman: what exactly is this unit?

standing by a small mixer on a stand, was actually looking for 1 and thinking of taking it with me, just turn the knobs and faders to feel the build.
salesperson: please sir, do not change the settings of the system ,it is fine tuned (a 16 ch mixer?!)
me: it isn't connected to anything, not even to the wall
salesperson: well yeah

still OT... but,

concerning GC,

Ive had good dealings with an area pro account handler. Try GC Pro, and talking with a rep. Got great service/fair deal on a big ticket (for me) item.

Was that the same day I asked for rack screws and the chick stared at me for a second like she shit herself, turned, and just picked up some random nuts and bolts.

"Are these what you're talking about?"

I know both of those broads didnt get their jobs for their looks......
