Experience....( There's No Substitute..!)

Hi all. Just sharing an experince I had this week that brought me to this topic. My refridgerator broke down about 3 weeks ago and it was finally repaired today!.... . Here's my case: " The 'Fridge went down( stop coolig/freezing) about 3 weeks ago as I mentioned. I called out a Tech and he diagnosed it as the compressor had gone bad. Ok...he orders a compressor and said it would be 4 days before the company (he was with) could schedule another repair date. ( This compressor is under warranty.). That being said, that 4 days go by and the new compressor arrives! So...another Tech comes to install the compressor. He finishes, and says that in about 4 hours, it should be back in freezing form... WRONG..! I let it run for 1 day and a half, just to give it the benefit of doubt!.....It never even got cool. I call the company back and they sent out another Tech. ( all of these are different people). He checks the 'Fridge and say" it's the compressor.. must 've been bad out of the box.. ..I have to order another compressor". Four more days go by. Out comes another Tech to install the compressor! Yep...you guessed it... he says this compressor is bad also!.. ..

I think I'm a very patient guy and all ( ), but this is really getting old now! So....I call for this last time before I...well you know what I'm thinking now.. The people at the company apologizes and said give them this last try and if this doesn't work they wold just replace the 'Fridge! Ok...I say last time.. So they order another compressor. Four more days go by.( going into 3rd week now). The compressor came Thursday ( last week). Today, the Tech came out. But....something was different about this Tech, he was... Older..! He comes in, brings in the same tools etc. as the previous " younger" Techs. ( not dis'ing you younger Slutz's. There are plenty young people with experience. Just making a point). He opens up the Fridge', looks at the work the previous Techs had done and he smiled and said" There's nothing wrong with the compressor,I'll be right back"! He went to the Van, came back in replaced a part ( took 10 minutes top) and said plug it up! That's been about 4 hours ago and already the 'Fridge is making...ICE....!...... .... .. ...................... ..So the moral to this story, sorry if it took too long..." Even tho people may have the same tools ( gear in our case), the final chapter is gonna be'... Having the experience to produce the results"...!.. ..Thanks for listening.

Good story, but unless you asked how long each repairman has worked in the field, I would just chalk it up to the last guy being smarter. People change careers all the time, sometimes late in life. Some do it all their lives and never seem to get it. And sometimes the rookie smokes the whole house. Thus (as you noted) age does not always reflect skill. Performance does, however.

I know, I'm being completely pedantic here. But then again, I'm young

Hey Improv. Funny you should post that because I did ask! Turns out the Tech that fixed the Fridge', has been doing this for about 30+ years as he started in the Army as some type of specialist! The other Techs averaged out to about 5-10 years doing it. I think they did what they knew and felt was proper!.....

Yeah, you should have included this info in your original post to make your point.

Now I would hope the guy that fixed it went back and told the others what he did to fix it. THAT is a big part of how people get better. They don't need to spend another 20 years wasting customers' time to figure out how to do it.

I'd also bet that if the better skilled guy had been taking his kid along with him on jobs that kid could know a lot about how to repair refrigerators by the time he was 12.

The main thing I gather from your post is that these people are poorly trained. Do you really think they shouldn't have learned how to fix that in 5-10 years?! As I stated above, one of the best remedies would be for trhe better guy to share some knowledge.

Sorry it took so long for you to get the thing fixed.

Hey eyesore. Thanks for the compassion..!...thumbsup.. You're right. I should have included that info with my original post. Sorry. But...this is my whole point about experience. I agree that the first Techs should 've been train more properly or less lazy(?).. ... I think "experience" would have warranted a "deeper" look into the matter. Instead of taking the other's word for the problem, ( especially after the same new parts have been installed).. Look for yourself. After all, this is the motto we here at GS seems to think. " Try a piece of gear for yourself. It may not work for others, but it may for you".. ..!..I would think that the "average" recordist that tried 3 brand new pre-amps out of the box and was told that it must be the pre-amps and kept getting nasty distortion on a track, would look elsewhere for the problem!..( at least I think I would). Anyway, thanks to all that have replied! It all comes down to the results at the end. Man.......this Pepsi taste much better....COLD..!......

Its not the meat its the motion. A very Uncool but all too familiar story in most aspects of life. "Mediocrity is the mantra of low standards".
