Mixing Your Own Vocals :(

It kinda sucks right..? Cant even really tell if it sounds good...sometimes feel like maybe u just "shouldn't sing" lol...then other times wonder if the proper mix would fix it so u spend hours twisting knobs, throwing plugin after plugin on there...only to dump it and start all over. Maybe plugin _____ or plugin ______ will make ALL THE DIFFERENCE?? Maybe u should track the whole thing over with a new mic....?

Or maybe u just "shouldn't sing" LOL.

I think like most ppl, I felt super weird hearing my voice back the first time I would crank it WAAAAY down. Then I learned some basic general eq fundamentals for voice and that helped. Then I would add bcground vocals to fill it out. Effects of course added too.

But still sometimes...maybe I should just send my vocals off to be mixed by someone else and really hear myself back thru someone else's handywork. Maybe that mix engineer would tell me to use mic _____ or mic _______ for my type of voice. I really like singing and get really into it...while I'm tracking I feel like its fckn exciting and dope. Playback is where I start to come back down.

Just thinking out loud...sorry. Anyone else go thru this though?

THANKS!!

I'll be honest and say no.. Because I spent the last 10 years recording others whilst learning how to do it. It's a tough gig though and not for the faint hearted.

Being that, like many, I can't stand my own voice, I can relate
When you sing do the birds fly away?
Are you a singer? Voice lessons?
I am told it helps if you sing on key! LOL
I have been told I have a good voice, but am a guitarist/keyboardist who uses lots of effects and make sound changes even through solo's. So vocals were not practical. Even if I didn't use effects and edit synth, I don't play and sing at the same time.

I was that "I'm not a singer" person for a long time...until our reggae band in HI lost our lead singer. Our lead guitarist stepped up and did a pretty good job and had a lot of fun...it inspired me to try and my first attempt wasnt a FLOP like I thought it might be. That inspired me to keep trying.

But then our band broke up!! I didnt really sing much more after that...except at karaoke bars, then I got into DAW recording.

Anyways...this is my latest beast thats eating me up. U can skip the :20 intro, I make instrumentals but this one isn't mine.

My friend just showed up...I'm outta here

Not bad brother.
Dig the intro and the little LFO stuff. Nice overall performance.
The vocals are decent, but could use a bit of soulfulness most of us white guys cannot do.
Dig it though, I am a big reggae fan from Eek A Mouse to Shabba Ranks and everything in between.

Yeah thats the thing too; grew up in HNL listening and playin reggae but I'm not into the faking the patois accent thing like some non-Carribbean artists do. I think if u lived there for a long duration of time and really soaked it up like Alborosie or Gentleman did its cool.....just gotta be real. NO FAKIN!

I should probly stop posting stuff but I feel a lil better about this one; this was a freestyle too that I eventually added bckgrnd vocals to

Seriously I've been a singer for like ever, the thing that weeds out the pro's from the amateurs is sheer damn determination. I always could keep in tune but when I started I had a really weak voice, now I can deafen people in the same room without trying...

Plus it's always a shock to record yourself first time, oh and don't smoke.. It doesn't do anything good for your vox. :D

Also exercise is a massive part to play in a decent vocal, as well as skill and technique etc.

LOL don't feel bad. You are light years ahead of me production wise.
I'm a semi-pro player who can't afford studio or pros trying to figure out recording. Its f$#&ing hard as hell. At times discouraging. I am trying to put together an instrumental piece I can hang my hat on.......

What kinda music? What software u using to record?

I would love to relish in ur compliment, (esp after the come-down on that vocal track) but that instrumental WASNT mine. It says so in the Soundcloud descrip, but yeah I forgot to mention that here.

My stuff is WAY better though, and some of it can be heard here lol:

Not just the voice: Watching videos of myself performing creeps me out as well.

Yeah see I feel like when its eq'd right and has good effects on it and sits in the mix RIGHT like all the songs we're used to from most of the stuff we hear everyday, I think its tolerable, if not fun. Of course certain NOTES will still bug you...and then u get that 'I gotta fix that!'...but its so hard when ur busy.

I would have my finger hovering over the stop button when I was playing my vocals for other ppl at first...it would be like 1st alarm (bad note)...2nd alarm (too dramatic)...3rd alarm....(bad note again)...OK STOP!!

The first time I just let a song play with other ppl in the room was kinda funny to me....to be honest I think it was my mom . She didn't ask if it was me....I was so used to hitting STOP when someone dropped by.

I've learned to notice the subtle nuances to what UR music/vocals does to a room, regardless of ppl's verbal opinions. U almost don't have to ask sometimes when u play a mix for other ppl. It's not just reading between the lines of what they say...it's kinda feeling the vibes in the room. If u feel like hitting STOP when ppl are there...yeah it SUCKS lol. If ur ok and feel comfortable letting it play....u might have something...esp if the ppl in ur room are musicians/music aficionados.

There's a lot of great ambient synths out there that would be great for that stuff. U use Absynth? Steinberg just came out with Padshop which has great evolving pads too.

U have any examples of ur stuff?

Thing is you will always be more overcritical and notice things nobody else will, it's a fine line between an actual issue and you just getting up in your own grill !

I'm recording some vox for a new song.. Actually for once it's the mic I don't like not the vocals Also I noticed phrasing things to your advantage always makes such a difference, I have an innate ability to make everything sound depressing so I try to add more words in my song to keep it flowing and not adding depressing curve tails on the end of words

No examples yet. Still really learning to play keys.
I will have a video soon of me playing an improv.
I really am not into softsynths, hence my signature.
Any synth can be ambient if treated right with quality delay, reverb, etc.
A bud of mine has Omnisphere and Alchemy sounds pretty good.
I like using my Alpha Juno for pads. Great six voice anlaog with sub-oscillators.
