Movie theater bass

Saw Prometheus the other day in a theater. The building literally shook. Had to pick my teeth up off the floor.

WE DON'T NEED SO MUCH F-ING BASS.

I'd bet it's not as bad as going to see Neil Young solo and sitting in the "bass trap" section of orchestra seating in a theatre.

If we're talking music that clouds a mix I agree.

But at a movie theatre, I want my seat shaking when the explosions and gun fire are happening. YEEEEAH! Let that LFE channel purr!

I don't even like surround sound that much. The screen's in front of me, why do I want to hear stuff coming from behind my head?

Maybe your theater was calibrated differently. I saw it in IMAX in NYC and I thought the "shaking" helped sell the film. When Prometheus first landed on LV233 the sensation was awesome. I thought it helped making me feel that the engines were tremendously powerful.

Other than that scene I never thought about it so it never was a problem for me at least....

For contrast, I think one of the worst usages of low end was in The Dark Night. Batman's deep voice was just too over the top for me and really pulled me out of the movie several times.... without shaking the floor...

What's worse is sitting the adjoining theater trying to enjoy a film that was mixed with dynamics, while the whole damn building is quaking from nonstop 150db of 20cps.

We've turned movie theaters into pimpmobiles. Crying shame. The solution is getting more elderly folks out to the movies as a counterbalance. Organize a nursing home field trip to a crash-em-up at the cineplex. Sit back and let the angry letters and phone calls flow. You'll be doing the lord's work.

Ahhhhh I haven't seen a movie in a theatre or at home or movie ad in over 15 years. Don't miss them at all. Come to think of it I've probably seen about 5 movies my whole life. And they were annoying as hell.

Another good reason why I don't go to theaters anymore. The dynamics are too much at one point then the dialogue drops so low that I have to strain to hear.

These days I rigged a stereo compressor between the DVD player & stereo and just watch DVDs at home, and I'm a lot happier.

I have did that.

I love movies at the theater with my wife, just seems so real, I also have (2) 8 foot screens at home with HD projectors, I just never get tired of movies.

My question is: how do they get the sound in the theaters (not talking low end) the character of it ?, I cannot explain but a theater sounds amazing. Is it the room ?
I don't mind the dynamics but don't like when it gets to low to hear.

5 movies in your life? Are you one of those people who don't see the point of made-up stories?

Now THIS I will sign. Loud ass explosions coming off a quiet scene. Dynamics are cool but when the neighbors or significant other get woken and you get screamed at it's a problem.

Rip the audio off one of those discs and see what's up. Some DVD players and TVs have a software compressor built in (often times called "night mode") but they don't work too well. A hardware compressor is a great idea LOL!

I wonder if there's a way to wire a brickwall limiter so as to completely silence loud TV ads.

Some might say Fellini, Bergman, Kubrick, Kurosawa, Hitchcock, Chaplin, et al, are artists with something to contribute to the human experience. That film is a worthy art form is, ya know, about as uncontroversial a belief as one could have. I asked a simple question out of curiosity, because you're a statistical oddity, and when I see odd people and things I try to understand them. There's really no need for the superior attitude.

My new-ish Sony has that feature. I made my wife very happy when I turned that feature on.

This is what I used. Cheap and it works. You only need RCA adaptors to the 1/4" jacks.

What I hate are the really, REALLY, LOUD MOVIE EXPLOSIONS. Hurts my ears. We wear ear plugs when we go to the movies now. Ugh...

My first experience requiring earplugs was, I think, Avatar but perhaps that last, crappy, Indiana Jones flick.

These days, because of the excessive volume, we try and wait for it to hit DVD and then watch at home. The only reason we see a movie in the theater now is for 3D or Imax or some thing cool like that.
