API opamp rant

NOT hot. Just blew the opamp of my 2500 in the middle of a project.
Second opamp to go in the last 14 months.
Screenprinting on faceplate also coming off.

Considering that API is refusing to supply additional spares,
this is
Not hot at all

greets

Tim

I am no expert, but it sounds like a power supply issue.

I would socket the opamps if they aren't already and check the ouput voltage of the suspect opamps before/after swapping out. You can look up pinout configuration online. Have tech do it if you aren't comfortable with multimeter.

my personal experiences:

-Cold solder in resistor/fuse. look for crisped out carbon resistor

-Failing capacitor discharging leading to transient power spike. Look for leakage on cap leads

-Crappy/dirty IC socket/crowned pcb opamp solder joint. Use magnifying glass

Weak sauce on API's part.

Send the opamp back to them with app 95.00 and they will send a new one, they will need your serial # as well for warranty on the new opamp.
Takes at least a couple weeks or more, I know been there down that a few times.
I would buy extra ones off gearslutz when they come up if I were you for spare so you aren't out in the cold.

Replace them with red dots. The API ones seem to blow all the time. They should really have to replace them. I have been on the red dots now for a couple of months and could not be happier.

I live near API. About a half hour away in D.C. Want me to beat them up for you?

My Recordings/Credits

There are plenty of other API sized DOA's out there for you to choose from.

Some sound better too.

Most will cost less than what API will charge.

Thank you all for your suggestions.
I'll have my tech have a good look at the power supply, and I have a pair of red dots on their way to me.

Nice work. You won't regret them. Takes the API to a new level for me. They also dont get as hot thanks to the open design.
