just stopped a wife-beating

Don't be confused by the title. This goes to the moan zone because it gave me an overall bad vibe, despite helping out a woman in trouble.

About an hour ago while passing by a tailor shop downtown, I heard a elderly woman screaming for help and that her husband was trying to kill her. The husband was swatting his wife and grabbing at her neck. I stepped in the door and calmly said "what's going on here?"

The man let go of her and I told him to stand outside. She had a phone in her hand so I asked her if she wanted to call the police. She wanted me to talk to the 911 dispatcher because her English wasn't strong and she was shaken-up. At this point, the old man grabbed my arm and tried to pull the phone away from me, so I told him "Sir, let go of me NOW." He was shouting that she was making something big out of nothing and that I should mind my own business. All I could think to do was tell him "Get outside now and don't come back in here." Luckily he did.

I told the lady to lock herself in the shop and wait for the police to show up. She did and the old man took off. I didn't see what happened after that because I had to leave.

Overall, it left a bad vibe on me although I felt ok about having stopped what could have been alot worse. That's enough to frazzle nerves for a day...

That was brave and very decent of you, it is risky 'getting involved'.

Not surprising you're a bit shaken up, if they are a married couple at that age somehow it is even harder to see people in such awful straits.
