facebook - band name annoyance

This is a random small gripe but it's still annoying me.

We've had a band name for a few years now we love; along with logo, artwork, imagery that all thematically works with it and is very unique and cool in my opinion..i think it could go far in terms of distinguishing us from other bands.

Anyway facebook.com/mybandname is already taken by some random dude. It is basically a worthless waste of a profile/facebook URL by some guy whose occupation is working at "Having a Boner" . (lol).

Also, the url of mybandname.com is taken too; but the owner is doing nothing with the site.

I've contacted the site owner (at least I think i did, i might have to write a letter because not much was listed on the info of the owner and the address is the only for sure thing..and I could try contacting the web hosting site he uses to inquire).

I really don't want to change my band name but I hate settling on mybandnameband.com and facebook.com/mybandnameband.

I'm gonna just try to contact these people (the facebook owner and the site owner) as best I can; see if I can get the URL for some fee if I have to pay (but I'm not going to spend a ton of $$ or anything). Worst case I'll go with the alternative site names (adding "band" at the end) and try to buy the domains if we ever make it big.

That's it really

I'd suggest you look up the domain and see when it expires. If it's not for a while then contact the owner. Hopefully the dude in control won't ask for your balls in return for it... As for the facebook URL, again the guy could be cool about it but who knows.

And what about .net, .org etc?

My-band-name.com probably isn't taken... you can check GoDaddy.com to see if it is.

Peace

Those are actually taken too except for .org is the only one with an actual site and it says that it is for sale but I'd rather just use a .com with a slightly modified name anyway.

The .com/.net sites are owned by the same guy and expire today. However, from what I've read; they have like 45 days to renew or something; and then another 30 day period or some bs; so it would take 75 days before I could get the site; at which point I may have to bid on it if other people want it (I didn't think it was THAT great of a website name; just a cool band name.)

So I've contacted the email listed on WHOIS, along with his hosting site explaining my interest. Worst case i'm either going with "mybandnameband.com" or "mbnband.com" (3 letter acronym of band, which isn't available but adding band at the end and it is).

This probably sounds stupid & trivial to some but I am taking this online marketing approach seriously. We've been working on our music/sound for a few years and this is the first time we're going to try and make a real push for building a fan base.

Yes that's available. But I want it to be something I can tell people on the street or at a show without having to tell them punctuation marks they gotta use. I think it's easier to say "go to appleorangeseedband.com" or go to "aosband.com" than it is to say "go to appleorangeseed.com, but put dash marks in between the 3 words"

kno what I mean?

THanks to those who are responding with advice though

(and we aren't called apple orange seed lol)

Good advice, except for the GoDaddy part. Don't use them. Don't even use them just to check availability - I've heard stories of domains that were available suddenly become mysteriously registered (and available for expensive secondary purchase) when they weren't actually bought on the spot. Have a quick check of your favourite search engine for more horror stories...

I find that adding the suffix "MUSIC" to a URL is simple yet nice and effective.

mybandnamemusic.com
myspace.com/mybandnamemusic

yes we may go that route. I think at this point it seems easier. The guy on FB accepted my friend request..he has like 100 friends though already on there so i don't know if he'd be willing to start a new profile for a small amount of $$.

It's hard coming up with a cool unique band name. I actually found a few online that have used this; but from my legal searches; none of them have ever sold anything; trademarked anything; and most don't even have music up; and the ones who do sound really bad and I'm not really worried about them in terms of competition for the name. None have official websites that I can find, just old myspace or facebook and none have great URLs (except maybe the myspace dudes but i'm probably not creating a myspace).

i'm kinda liking the acronym-band name "mbnband.com" and "facebook.com/mbnband"

the "mbnmusic.com" is actually a site for a music company using those acronyms but not for the same words..somewhere in europe

If we actually make it big enough that we really feel we need the official domain then I'm sure we can afford to buy it at that point. This is too much stress when we are still completely unknown to most the world haha..but hopefully not for long

If you end up deciding to change your band name, I have one that I've kept locked up in the vault for some time that I may be willing to part with.

It's super HOT and almost guaranteed to bring results!

Are you ready for this?

Get ahold of the domain name owner. Squatters and hoarders will give it up in a heartbeat for very low dollars. Make repeated inquiries if you need to, try not to appear too anxious. If they get nutty run it through a valuator and bring them back to reality. If it costs you more than a couple hundred bucks I would be REALLY suprised.

That's the plan. I've sent a few emails to whatever contact info i found (one to the email on the WHOIS and one to the hosting site "dreamhost.com").

The guy on FB accepted my friend request so I'm waiting to see if he's willing to delete his page basically and start over so I can use the name.

I don't pland on spending more than $100-$200 bucs for the domain. I'm not sure if FB has the ability for him to transfer ownership of a URL name to me or not without him having to just delete his page and start over. I'll try to contact them on that.

Update -

You can't transfer username's between facebook accounts. The only way I'll get the facebook name is if I secure a trademark on the name (which is the eventual goal once we start selling our stuff here and out of state); and then tell facebook someone's username is your brand/trademark.

So something I'll hopefuly have to worry about one day but not for now.

I'm not even sure that will do you any good unless they're actually violating your servicemark by selling or promoting a similar product in the same category. If the owner of your mybandname.com was selling music or promoting live bands you could get an enforceable Cease and Desist against them pretty easily, if they're selling car wax and you didn't file for car care products category your legal standing might leave you SOL.

To the OP. That's a bad story. If you don't have to rely on this name, change it and get all websites and Facebooks etc at once.
