Why is there no IMDB for Music?

Why is there no internet database for music like IMDB is for movies and television?

A lot of people say that it would be impossible to catagorize, but a completely disagree.

IMDB's basic format is: Movie/TV Show - With the Director, writers, Actors listed. You select any of them and it brings you to a page which lists all of the other movies and shows each person was in. If you select one of those TV shows or Movies, then it brings you to a page which list the: Director, writers, actors, etc... and goes on and on with each page containing trivia, filming locations, etc.

For Music it could have for example: Album - Producer, engineers, writers, musicians, etc. You select any one of them and it brings you to their page which lists every recording that they have ever worked on in order, then every band/group that they have been associated with in a different bracket. You select the recording (Album, Single, EP, etc) and it brings you to a page which will again list the: Producer, engineers, musicians, etc. Each page would have trivia and list what studio the recordings were recorded in (Just liek how IMDB list filming locations), even what equipment they used.

I don't see why a website has not been created for this yet?

allmusic used to be good but it stagnated and is kind of pathetic compared to imdb. discogs is pretty hit or miss. I agree that if somebody just made an identical clone to imdb but for music it would instantly be better than either of those existing options.

wikipedia is often the best source for that kind of stuff these days but it's annoying to use compared to imdb because there is no standard formatting and things aren't always linked up together in a predictable way.

I guess the problem is there's not as much demand for a music-related database as there is movies. I know I probably hit up IMDB two or three times a week watching TV or a movie saying "what else has that person been in"...but I'd agree that Wikipedia is probably the place I go to most when I have a music-related question. I don't think I'd even thought about Allmusic in the past few years until I saw this thread, and I had to check to see if it was even still around.

Allmusic is truly a disaster. Please do not support it. It's one of the most unfortunate things that has ever happened between "music" and "internet."

They WILL NOT fix errors, and they DO NOT care that those errors are spread all over the internet, eternally. And their "reviews" are truly the definition of amateur.

LOL hillarious... I'd never heard of Allmusic, until now. I'm almost tempted to check it out.

Maybe the people who run GearSlutz should create their own site? It could potentially be the largest music website in the world.

Wikipedia is the closest. Much better than AllMusic and the other websites, but it is still not as good as IMDB.

Hell yeah bro. I love IMDB, as I'm a film buff... but truly, TRULY, this would be amazing for music... especially the producer/engineer credits.... god. SO great. You can see the "music/band family tree" such as:

The Long Winters - see also Harvey Danger

The Shins - see also Broken Bells

Trespassers William - see also Ormonde, Lotte Kestner

Azure Ray - see also Maria Taylor, Orenda Fink, O&S, Now It's Overhead, etc.

FANTASTIC idea. It would take FOREVER to build the database (over a year I'm sure) but... worth it, if it were to generate income/ad revenue. I would start with ONLY recent bands... ONLY... like 2000-2010.... to start. Can you imagine the records needing to be kept for all the vinyl/jazz releases? My god. It would be mind-blowing. But, if you get say, 50 friends to help build the info... copying and pasting like mad... getting a web geek friend to set up the backend... it would definitely be worth it.

I'd be happy to help you with this, somehow.

Maybe a Kickstarter campaign?

I think that Allmusic pretty much misses the point. Wikipedia does a much better job.

Rate Your Music is a good site, though it's mainly for posting reviews and cataloguing your collection. Worth a try though. Welcome! - Rate Your Music

Because Wikipedia is open to be edited by anybody, does anyone want to log onto Wikipedia and add a section to each album listing: Which studios, gear, console, etc. were used?

You may have all of the information for yourself, but wouldn't it be nice to share it so that anybody who goes on the Wikipedia page for the particular albums can view it?

Since there is no IMDB for music, we should utilize Wikipedia.
