Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. It's got nothing to do with religion or morals or rewards in the afterlife. It's a completely practical strategy for making a much better world, right here and now. In the wifal situation discussed above, we all know what we would think of the guy who was slinging lawyers at a woman who made an innocent mistake, in order to rip her off for many thousands of dollars.

Unless you want to be that guy, then don't do it to other people. Who it's being done to makes no difference, it's the deed that is wrong, and their misdeeds do not erase yours against them. All misdeeds have negative polarity, so they never cancel each other out, they only accumulate.
