The power of contrasting opinions ! And when the polarity is injected with some spontaneous silliness, the thread can *really* take off / sprout wings / surge / gain momentum / catch on / like a runaway freight train / or a sagebrush wildfire.

Check out the "Can SOPA save the music industry?" thread. Classic example of a thread that never dies. I have subscribed, unsubscribed, forgot about it, and resubscribed twice already. Since the original post, it has devolved into some sort of pissing match between people who are borderline insulting each other over different views on the future of the industry.

THAT's how threads never die.

Because they're really good for starts/ Plus Fletcher, Allabouttone and I each have 50 login identities each and we collude on making them popular. It's a lot of logging in and out as different "Personalities" but it's fun.

And on one caught on... until now...

It actually hinges on what the fifth post is-- little known fact.

If the fifth post contains some grandly exaggerated claim, or challenge, or declaration, then the thread will blossom and bloom and flourish.

If, on the other hand, the fifth post is just a simple explanatory trifle-- zero-ville.

This is an outrage - how can you make a statement like that..We all know the response to the fifth post is what gets it going!

I better not enter this thread. I certainly don't want to get caught up in the avalanche of responses. (snow yer limit - stay within it)

Blame me...

I invited folks from IDMforums to come many here months back... and then I proceeded to ask the IDMforum mods to ban me (which they did).

I'm being silly because I can't take credit for all these threads of course and I wasn't the only person from IDMforums who told folks there to come here. But I have noticed this site get quite a bit more silly since that time period.

Future Producers --> IDMforums --> GearSlutz

I'm kinda joking, but kinka not joking.

I think the technical definition of "disorder" is when the waiter gets to your table and you say... "Actually... I changed my mind."

Well, if Abe Lincoln were on this board, he would undoubtedly phone in his old saw that "the world will little note nor long remember what we said here," but it seems like the threads that go on and on are always about some intractable issue for which there is no solution. Take the SOPA thread in the Music Business forum-- please! You got two sides: the posters who are hopping mad about the unfairness and pervasiveness of what they call "piracy" and then on the other side the rational people who see that the very structure of the internet lends itself to the free exchange of 1's and 0's and to try to 'toll booth' the flow of these electrons... rotsa ruck! And then... it's kind of no wonder you don't see revivals of Our American Cousin, but can you imagine what a pall it would have cast if they'd been at a performance of Rocky Horror Show?

This thread shows major potential. The OP has been unofficially nominated for the awareness prize for potentially knowing darn well it would evolve into a thread with tremendous longevity. I'll admit, it's a presumptuous proposition, but it certainly seems plausible.

OTOH, maybe the OP genuinely and innocently wanted to discover the specific requirements for thread longevity and popularity. Maybe the OP had absolutely no idea what the prerequisites are. But what would Sherlock do in such a situation ? Why, he'd float a test balloon, of course, while making notes on the intricate details. Consider this to be such an experiment.

This thread will not likey lose it's vitality or momentum, as far as I can tell. I could be wrong, though. But I'm certainly willing to do my fair share in order to contribute to it's momentum. If it needs a bump in the wee hours of the morning, I'm totally willing to do that.

If this thread could talk (and do impressions), it would most certainly emulate Charlie Sheen's voice and announce that it is currently *winning*.
