Thread Starter | Sick Of Florida any suggestions?
Hey gents, I had a good run in California for 25 years. Moved in 2005 to Florida to be by my parents ,but It's killing me. This little college town has high property taxes. A lousy music scene. My properties are dropping fast. Anyone know any good states to move to with affordable houses and nice people. We were looking at North Carolina, West Virgina. Any suggestions/ thanks GT.

So far Durham [NC] hasn't sucked... only been here for 6 months but so far - so good.

My wife would love to move to Raleigh or Durham. She has family there and in Coats NC. Here in Gainesville FL. because the university of Florida does not pay property taxes everyone else pays up the arse. Try about 9k per year just to own some rental properties. The tax stays high while my 3 properties have dropped about 160k in value. should have bought gold. I am going to look into home prices in NC. Oh yes and property taxe rates. ![]() GT.

Yeah NC is pretty nice. The Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill triangle has some cool stuff going. It's no where near LA but better then Florida IMO. It's worth a check out. It's always number 1 or 2 in the best cities in the US for growth and potential. Hit me up if you are comin up. Maybe Austin.

I grew up in Florida but I ran out of musicians to play with! There are a lot of nice people down there. I live in NYC now (Brooklyn currently) and it's hardly affordable but there is no place that I have been that is more energized and inspiring. That said, I do like Athens, Ga and San Francisco. But nothing really compares. |

| Get. The. Fu#k. OUT! ![]() Seriously, I was born in Jacksonville and grew up in St. Augustine. If you don't want to teach at Full Sail or work for Disney, you'll starve. I lived in L.A. and loved it, but way too many people, smog and earthquakes. Lived in NYC and loved it, but it costs waaaaaaaaay too much to live the rock star lifestyle that I'm accustomed to. So I came to Atlanta, a great city with a healthy music and movie scene and the busiest airport in the world. I can get anywhere from here. And mostly direct flights. But don't come here because all the audio jobs are taken! Just kidding, get your ass outta Florida (the dumpster of the south) and get to Atlanta or Athens or Nashville. They're not too far away from the sunny state and very affordable to live well...

^^^ lol, ok so there's ONE thing we can agree on -- Yes! Get out of Florida ASAP! Atlanta is indeed a great city, only been there a few times but loved it. Haven't been to NC. I will say, I know about two dozen+ ex-Floridians here in Colorado, between my roommates and all of our friends that we've gradually convinced to move out here and their friends, etc., and we all love it here. I've been in Denver for two years now and it's been a great move and a great change of pace - beautiful scenery, a 'classier' breed of people (ha), as fast or slow paced as you want it to be, definitely not overcrowded or congested like a lot of the bigger cities, a GREAT music + arts scene that is just about ready to bubble over into some national attention real soon IMO, pretty much everything I was looking for in a new destination after living in the Ft. Lauderdale are for 10+ years. Great homes and the real estate market will bounce back hardcore out here in the next few years so if you're looking to buy now's the time. Also, you can go like skiing and snow tubing and stuff in the Rockies right next to all the front range cities, so you know there's that too. |

| Actually my brother, there's many things we can agree on! ![]() I love Denver. Colorado is just heaven to me. I dig the skiing and outdoors there a lot. Florida was great growing up and being a surfer, chasing beach bunnies around. If you're like a lot of my family and are retired and have some money, it's a pretty great place to live. I do miss the fresh seafood. If, for some unholy reason I had to move back to Florida, I would choose St. Petersburg. That place is beautiful and a lot less red-necky than north Florida... |

I live in a small beach town in Florida by Pensacola (primarily because of the job I got coming out of college) and pretty much hate it. I do know some other original bands / artists in the area and hopefully we can start getting a better music scene going on at least; but there is really no culture here and it's got a slight redneck vibe. |

Seattle. I dig it, despite the passive aggression et al. I've got someone who keeps leaving a note on my car that says "Learn how to drive" and they've been doing it randomly for over a year. This is how many people here communicate; not to your face when they see, smile and talk to you, but later on after the face-to-face encounter has ended where they can then let you know how they really feel - without letting you know who they are. Some folks will look at you like you've lost your fu*king mind if you should say "hi" to them when passing them on the street. I really fu*king hate the cops here and that's all I have to say about that. The rent can be high - as fu*k. But I love the rain and you have to as well to enjoy living here. The "greatness" of the current music scene is subjective, but very much alive and there are many musicians to sift through - and, of course, there is the history, which some argue is just that; history. Great food. I must admit that I cried when The Lusty Lady closed down. Guess you have to had been there to truly understand what was lost.

Maybe you're just in the wrong part of FLA? My ma lives in the greater St. Petersburg area and almost every year, I take my kids and go spend some time with her there. As she likes spending time with her grandkids, it allows me some time to get out and explore the local scene and I have to say... Tampa, St. Petersburg, St. Pete's Beach, Largo etc... not a bad area. And the weather is great, and the living is easy...

If it were me I'd hit up New Orleans. COL isn't bad, most of the hurricane shit is cleaned up, awesome music scene. Love that place, I go whenever I can.
