Who else would love to keep Pop music out of this forum?

By this I mean all the noobs posting new threads every 5 seconds asking how to get that Ke$ha synth, that LMFAO lead, that Black Eyed Peas kick etc.

While this thread/poll is probably pretty moot anyway... are you referring to stuff like LMFAO and Pitbull and David Guetta? Or talk about mainstream EDM like Skrillex and Deadmau5?

This thread is definitely going to be a good one we're going to get a lot out of it I'm sure.

As I understand it, it's a site primarily intended to discuss various Gear items and their use (or misuse). If there are pop engineers with knowledge to contribute, who cares whether you or I personally like the music they put out? I don't like mainstream country, but I wouldn't ignore the opinions of an experienced Nashville engineer because he worked with Conway Titty.

As much as I like the idea of standing in the corner with my sunglasses on, smoking an unfiltered cigarette in a New Order t-shirt and shitting on music that wasn't made before 1995, I don't think there's any reasonable way to do this.

The problem is that once we start drawing lines, things get very dicey. Unlike rap/hip hop, this isn't even a genre-specific forum - anything that falls under the broad definition of "electronic music," which can be construed to encompass nearly all music made today, is fair game here.

Even if we did a simple split, like "EDM" and "not EDM," people's definition of dance music varies wildly today - who's to say what goes where? There's too much cross-over.

Unless we're going to start pigeonholing the shit out of our posts, this simply isn't feasible.

Plus, I kind of like having such a breadth of discussion - it helps me think of things in a way I might not have otherwise (though, admitidely, I've seen enough "PHAT BA$$" threads to last me three lifetimes )

Let's get rid of pop, house, trance, nu disco, supersaws, DCOs, digital equipment made after 1995, analog music made after 1984, any synth that stays in tune, new analog equipment that isn't made entirely of old parts found in a moldy warehouse, any musician who's popular, computers, young punks, old farts, and, and . . . . and . . . . . ouch I'm out of breath!!!!!! Geepers, I got myself worked into a tizzy there.

On second thought, let's keep it all. It's all good. Except for the trolling.

Nah keep it, it's great having the same threads over and over, it's like Groundhog Day mixed with Memento, each morning I wake up with "DONT TRUST SKRILLEX" tat'ed on another part of my body.

Every question going something like "how do I emulate (sound/production values/etc.) from (famous pop song)" will get at least 5 replies saying "this song sucks/this artist sucks/you suck for having bad taste".

So it's nice to talk about not being elitist, but a better approach would be to hit report on those posts, because they're merely taking a crap on the thread and aren't answering the question.

The only thing that really bothers me about those threads is that 99% of Pop music consists of bread and butter sound that anyone with a decent knowledge of synthesis can achieve in a few minutes, if not seconds. I mean, shit, I have Lady GaGa and Ke$ha on my iTunes. It just seems to me that Pop music brings out noobs that want everything spoon fed to them. Well, Dubstep kinda does too but that's a different story. At least Dubstep has more interesting sound selection. Like, for f*cks sake, asking how to make an LMFAO/Afrojack Dirty Dutch lead it's like saying you have no idea how a synthesizer works and you can't even figure out how to detune two oscillators and pitch bend. AND THAN WHAT?!

Yes. The rest is mostly a matter of processing, so if it doesn't sound fat or loud enough, blame the mix, take a look at the compressor settings, try stereo wideners, etc.

However, the resources available to learn synthesis have lagged as well. They don't contain contemporary examples (this always helps) and while they explain what everything does they don't teach analytical skills which are a vital part in answering those questions (and bringing those sounds back down to earth). Meals aren't prepared without spices, so why a single patch should roll out of a synthesizer fully formed and perfectly duplicated - I don't know.

I just gave up on answering dubstep bass questions. I don't mind the other ones much because as you say, it only takes a few minutes. But that bass? I mean, it's really nice that after trying to tear it apart, you too can end up with a perfect copy of a Skrillex bassline. Thing is - what are you going to use it for? A karaoke version?

I've done a lot of different electronic genres over 15 years and I've found a lot of good stuff and knowledge from the "pop threads", even tho I don't really care for pop. You can utilize tricks from any genre in any genre.

I haven't been on this forum for long, but I'm already a bit tired of reading the same genre bashing on a lot of threads which I have found pretty useful and informative.

What is pop music? Music I guess music played on radio... and David Guetta is played a lot on radio so it's pop music.

The thing I find really boring with a lot of pop music or commercial dance music is that they composed a great 8 bar bass and melody part. And then nothing happens… it’s just copy past, playing around with the filter on the whole track, changing a sound. Same with lycics… it’s just a one-liner chorus. I guess David and the gang just laks imagination…
I get so tired listening to that kind of music… I like variations, vers, chorus bridges and stuff. Something that surprise me… When listening to a dance track you know what will happen the next 4 bars. Boring!!

The line between electronic music and other music is so blurry these days. Even rock tracks are made almost like an electronic track these days, with sample replacement, autotune and cut'n'pasting from several different takes being so common.

If you don't like the more pop-oriented topics, then simply don't open them and definitely don't respond to them. It's as a simple as that.

Just out of interest, does this mean I shouldn't be in this forum? I use synthesizers and other electronic musical equipment, but I don't make "electronic music" I make Rock music. The principles are still there but the final product is different.
