As an exception to trying to always be original, there are times when being able to copy someone else’s work quite closely can be a financial benefit. Look at artists like Weird Al, or Bob Rivers-Twisted Tunes that parody recordings sometimes so closely they sound almost exactly like the original. Now, I realize that isn’t how you should approach doing something actually original, but that skill is nice to have. Without that near perfect rip off the song would have less impact. Also, I do music for some independent film makers, and in the process of working on the film the director will use a temporary score and or songs. They get so in love with these pieces of music and how they work with the scenes and editing sometimes that they simply will not accept any “original” music that doesn’t have the same feel, vibe and production values. So in those cases you may need to have the ability to create something that is “original” that you personally feel is a rip off of someone else. Also doing music for commercials and film, there is need to sometimes create a near exact cover of a piece because the director may only have the funds for the mechanical rights to a song that they want to use in their production and not the master use rights which can be prohibitive cost wise. In those cases the mechanical rights gives them rights to then record and produce the music of someone else. Like a cover of the Stones vs. the actual Stones recording. The cover will cost them less than using the original recording, and they will go to the musician / producer that can handle the task. You hear it in films all the time. If you are only interested in producing your own hit song that’s one thing, but crafting the skills to recreate something that already exists only strengthens your knowledge of sonics and enhances your abilities. Doesn’t mean you have to make it a goal. I practice scales and modes on guitar not because that’s all I’m ever going to play, but having that knowledge makes my vocabulary stronger. |

Because, most people follow. There are very few leaders. Most people don't know what's "hot" until someone else tells them. Music, like most other "popular" cultural interests, is based on trends. Most of the production I've done since I've been in the music industry has been with an artist or executive telling me they need a 'Janet Jackson type' sound. Or a 'Prince type' sound. Or, they tell you they want something original, and are then afraid of what you bring them. "Oh, I don't know. I like it, but..." Then, you present something more along the first line and they go with it. Because, it's familiar to them. That's why few stand out. It has been, and will always be this way...

Certainly music is often fashion but it most certainly can be a whole lot more than merely fashion!

Where did I fancy myself an innovator? Can you point to that post? You are the king of assumptions my friend. Quote:

I noticed we sold one a few days ago. Thanks for the support. Ummm… T…T…T…rollin' Nah. I find it humorous that you think you can somehow make me look stupid by disagreeing with everything I say in every thread I respond to. Apparently, I've gotten under your skin and rather than deal with it, you've decided that acting like a child will somehow make you feel better. How's it going? The thing is. I may not be perfect. But anyone that disagrees with EVERYTHING I say is going to just end up looking silly. Now, you wouldn't want that. Would you?

You, of all people, know how and that times have changed. Were people really "chasing" waves back then the way they are now? I could see a few record executives from today hearing that stuff for the first time and saying "yeah, it's great. But what format can we push this to radio?" No?

Originality is the fine art of remembering what you hear, but forgetting where you heard it. : )

. Honestly, I have no desire to have my name on other people's music. I mostly write and produce and mix my own music. For me. Yes, I do commercial music for others - agents, film makers, library/publishers, etc. But even here, I'm mostly doing everything - including (pseudo) mastering. But REALLY - I only want to see Kenny's name on other people's music. ![]() .
