WAY OT: My daughter was just busted for underage drinking

Ok guys, my fellow slutz.

My daughter, who's attending college at Arizona State in Tempe was partying at Lake Havasu last night and the cops rolled through this am and tested kids for alcohol content. My daughter, still slightly *up* from last night, didn't pass the test. So, her she's off to the slammer for the night tonight. Anyone have any idea about what the fine will be for an infraction like this? Apparently, she sees the judge in the morning tomorrow (yes, Havasu court is open 7 days a week).

Thanks much...

Not totally positive - but generally a slap on the wrist in the form of some misdemeanor probation and a few bills. (Please don't ask how I know this.)

I just found this:

Question: What is the maximum penalty for underage drinking?

Answer: Arizona law (ARS ยง 8-323) provides for the following penalties for a minor who purchases, possesses, or consumes, spirituous liquor:
1. Probation.

2. A juvenile court hearing.

3. Driving privileges suspended for 180 days.

4. Attendance at a counseling or education program.

5. A fine of up to $500.00.

6. Community service work.

7. If truancy is involved, a whole host of programs with parents.

8. With a prior record that indicates delinquency, a whole other host of headaches.

9. A stern talking to by the judge. (Don't laugh, an angry judge is a very scary thing.)
It appears that a judge can impose any combination of these things that he thinks is a good idea. Laws in other states are probably similar. The law about juveniles is never cut and dried.

It will all pan out brother Resonator...seriously.

First time infraction is cool. Judges don't like repeat offenders.

Thanks goodness you didn't see her on a 'Snoop doggs' The Girls of Arizona State go wild' videos! Or Drunk College girls volume 5... !!

Just imagine what those parents think when they see those commercials!!
It makes me laugh everytime.

Best of it!

Much Respect,

Yeah, she can't have a drink and yet she could probably get married at 16.

I've noticed since I've been in Texas that they ticket underage for not drinking. If you're not driving, it's another fine.

I gotta say that college kids drinking in the US has become quite a problem. They're not having a couple, they're getting freaking loaded until they black out. Often several nights a week.

That might be because it's so verbotten. Going to university, for lots of kids, is their first taste of "mom's not here!"

Think of all the stuff you survived. She'll be fine.

No disrespect to anyone, but man, the USA are a strange country sometimes...

Arrested for just drinking? No driving, no violence, no breaking of anything?
This would be impossible to imagine in the Netherlands.

However, I am in Singapore right now and I could imagine it here .

Good luck,
Dirk

Yeah, no doubt we've got some strange laws & "justice" here in the States.

Reso - You might want to make sure that nothings going to happen with her school. Years & years ago (when I was in college) I knew a chick who was dabling in "pharmaceutical sales & distribution" (ahem!) & she got nabbed off campus with a minor amount of narcotics & a few hundered bucks from sales. The authorites decided to inform her school & while she wasn't expelled, she DID lose her housing privileges and she had to be out of the dorms & find a new place to live in something like 72-hours!

I doubt that'll happen in this case but still...make sure she doesn't get put on double secret probation or whatever.

Suckage.

It'll all work out though.

Is her drivers license in AZ state or a neighbour state?

i got nailed with underage when i was 18 (27 now) i recall my fine being 350 and no com. service. it is a very dumb law. i remember my dads speach to me also
"i'm not upset you were doing it. i'm upset you were dumb enough to get caught"

a night in the drunk tank is no fun. hope your daughter and you all are doing well.

UPDATE. She was arrested with two of her girlfriends and taken to the local jail. I spoke directly with the jailer who told me that nothing bad would happen to the three girls while in custody...meaning they wouldn't allow anyone dangerous to get into their cell. I was hoping that all three would spend the night in jail, see the judge in the morning and learn a good lesson. BUT, one of the other parents gave in and bailed their daughter out. When that happened, the second parents thought they better do the same. So, sadly, I didn't want my daughter spending the night in jail on her own, so I paid the $100.00 and bailed her out. She's at her Havasu hotel tonight, and I hope she don't drink again tonight! She'll have to make the two hour trip to Havasu in about 10 days to go to court. Everyone has told me that it will result in a fine of $450.00 or so, and some probation. At the end of the probation, she can write a letter to the judge and perhaps get it off her "permanent" record.

Live and learn...thanks for all your input guys! And yes, Dirk, the US is ages behind the European countries in certain ways. I couldn't care less if she has a drink.

we were on tour in middle america in our 15 passenger van. an econoline e350. we'd just crossed 100,000 miles on the van and celebrated by opening 8 bottles of cheap wine. i was 18 at the time.

half way through the fourth bottle (everyone destroyed by this point) a cop pulls behind us because we're a giant van with it's lights off on the side of an interstate with 5 people inside, and we had new york plates.

i was in the driver's seat. keys were out of the ignition. cop immediately saw what we were doing, cut my driver's liscense in half, and sat behind us until someone could pass a sobriety test and drive away 2 hours later.

the cop didn't do anything with the law because his son was familiar with the band. we got off free and clear of anything.

That's crazy that they took her to jail just for that... I've been busted more times than I can count on one hand and never spent a night in the slammer, mostly for weed. I was pulled over in Georgia and they found weed: $150 ticket. They found weed on me in the airport in Philadelphia: I told the securit guard to keep it and he didn't tell on me. I've been thrown out of my fair shair of concert venues for underage drinking, etc.

And the kicker: at a String Cheese show in New Hampshire, I had taken some acid and had a whole bottle of Xanax in my pocket... almost as soon as we sparked up a joint, the authorities came down on us with flashlights and took us up to an interrogation room. Apparently, they were training up and coming officers to recognize signs of drug use. They kept us in there for the entire rest of the show making us walk lines, do vision test, etc. Meanwhile, we're tripping our asses off and I'm all ****ed up on Xanax... they got mad because I wouldn't stop laughing and they threatened to take us to jail. They didn't take us in even after they found the whole bottle of pills... they never found any acid though. They just couldn't figure out why our pupils were so big Ah, life is so much simpler sober

Rob,

I haven't taught her about Prairie Fire's yet. She turns 21 next March, and at that time, we'll have a night of good Tequila and the very best hot sauce! I personally can't wait!

JAIL for underage drinking?????? thats absolutely insane.

I mean I had a mate here in Aus who got put in the lockup overnight because he very publicly urinated while partying on the town but that was only to give him a chance to sober up.

you can legally (debatable) fire a gun at another human being at 18 yet you get taken to JAIL for drinking underage????

if that happened in Australia the police officer who brought her in would get their arse kicked by his boss, the Aussie media and the girls parents.

Im guessing this isn't common treatment for underage drinking? hope not.

I've raised my kids with only three "intoxicant" rules:

1) Don't EVER drink and drive
2) Don't EVER take drugs and drive
3) Don't EVER allow a friend to break Rule 1 or 2

As the addendum to the rules, Dad is available 24/7 for picking you up wherever you are to help you avoid breaking the three UNBREAKABLE rules (they've never taken me up on this).

The three rule system has worked pretty well so far, until this little hitch (which was not a violation of the three rules). My daughter did not go crazy at college like so many do, still maintaining her 4.0 grades, and I attribute this to our fairly "open" position on high school drinking/drugs. In this regard, none of our other parent friends are as open as we are, instead choosing the "you damned well better not drink or take drugs approach unless you want the whooping of a lifetime" approach. I'm not dissing that method at all, but I just wanted a more open dialog with my kids. Lord knows I smoked a lot of pot during high school, and I just didn't want to deny my own childhood in the raising of my children. I have never gotten high with my kids, and I don't buy for them, although when we're on vacation, my 20 year old daughter is allowed to have a beer or two when she's in for the night and won't be driving.

Parenting is kind of a bitch, because you have to make ALL THESE DECISIONS!

Ridiculous. They should have NEVER agreed to any sort of test. They weren't driving, as far as I can tell, no sort of altercation, nothing. Bunch of bs.

The US is becoming a damn police state.

b.t.w. I also went to ASU. I guess things were a lot different back then. Of course the age for drinking was only 19 at the time. Yes, it was a real party school. And yes, I partied with the best of em'.

My parents were much more relaxed with me about this stuff, and I feel it definitely helped, as well. I agree that forcing your kids to do something or not do something by threatening them can make them do even crazier damage to themselves and their environments out of natural rebellion.

It sounds like you've got the right idea, and that your children will very much appreciate this, especially when they get older. I've always been able to say that my parents just wanted me to be happy, they never forced my to do anything. I see lots of other people who try to live up their parents' expectations, and it seems like this can cause many confidence and independence issues.

I think it makes a lot more sense for children to have all the information they need to make their own decisions and draw out their own opinions and perspectives. Plus, later on they won't be blaming you for their unhappiness.

So, good going.
