ISA 220 and U195 no good... Who knew?

Just lost a hip-hop session because my ISA 220, VMP-2, U 195, SM7b, etc. weren't good enough? Their engineer needed an Avalon and some type of Neumann, even if it was a TLM103... Seriously?

I find the whole gear thing to be hilarious. People just walk around throwing around numbers without using their ears. I love great gear as much as the next gearslut, but at some point we have to get on to the business of making music.

Had it been an overdub session, that I could have understood.

Alright, that's the end of my pointless rant...

That's why I decided to get a u87ai and an AMS Neve 1073 DPD. No one will doubt their name.

Avalon is the fave brand of hiphopsters. That's the fashion of that industry.
If the session was a payer you could have hired. Or borrowed, almost every 2nd guy has one in his studio. It's the bottom of the line in the top end gear stakes, whatever that means. Basically, it's clean as clean can get. And priced nice 2nd hand.
Also, they ask for Neve here too, which is nothing like Avalon, so go figure... it's fashion, turn to the left, fashion, turn to the right. F-f-f-f-f-f...

Sure they will. Not everyone gives a shit about gear. When I first went into a studio to record I had no clue I was singing into a U87. Your last piece of work speaks louder than your gear.

Wait, it's an Ai? Not a vintage U87?

And it's an AMS Neve? Not the original...and no EQ?

That's funny, I use the U195 all the time on rap vocals, usually through an Avalon M5, it sounds great!

But with a closed-minded engineer like that, you are probably dodging a bullet by missing out on the session... Nothing's worse than some wanna be engineer that thinks they know everything, but actually knows just enough to be a PITA.

They're artists not audiophiles. The EQ one is coming soon

Basically I've gotten gigs because I had both in the studio. Especially for voiceovers it's important to have both.
