Thread Starter | Why do guitar and bass players do this?!?!?!
So a song is coming to an end and *suprise*, the guitar player actually made it all the way through without messing up. They sustain the last chord at the end of the song for a few seconds...cool, you can use that as a fadeout or something...and then all of the sudden they start noodling on the guitar and playing random bits and pieces! WTF! Maybe they didn't notice you are still recording, but it seems that more often than not, a guitar player feels like an impromtu guitar session should bust out 3 seconds after the song ends. Bass players, you are guilty too. Too often i have to edit this crap out and then i have to compromise on the ending of the song because of this or have to retrack more parts. During mixing... "uhh...could you make the fadeout last a litttle longer?" Me: "LISTEN to what you played!!!" Them: "Oh...do whatever then." And do you think they learn the next time i track the same band(s)? Nah. Sorry, had to vent. |

you have to remind them every session. sometimes more than once. also to keep from talking on the fadeout as well. i just make the fade more abrupt and be done with it if thats how it is.

Even worse for me is, vocalists that bent out nonsence right before punching them it. When you DO punch them in, the compressor hasn't even recovered and it SOUNDS like a punch. Idiots. There should be a law. |

Look serious and put your finger up to your lips in a "shhhhh be quiet!" motion, when they see you, scowl & waggle your finger in a 'dont f**k around, I am serious" fashion... tutt That can mutate into an OK sign if they behave and leave out the Yungwie Malmsteen bollox... They soon learn! And the distracting gestures prohibit them from doing anything but looking at you & holding the last chord. Try it!

Didn't it used to not matter as much? I can think of tunes by everyone from the Beatles to Van Halen to Led Zep where they were either talking, drinking, or ****ing around with their instrument at some point before, during or after the take. I give the evil eye to the industry on this one. Nowadays, at least compared to music from 20-40 years ago, everything has to be trimmed up too perfectly. I say let the musicians relax... but then they complain about stuff sounding woggy! They gotta know this ain't no rehearsal, nor is it a playground. It's costing somebody money, so take it seriously. |

I worked with a drummer who on several occasions (on the same recording) told us in the controlroom that he thought that this was a good take, before the cymbals had rang out.

Actually, the just holding out the chord thing kind of sucks, when the guys do it on EVERY SONG! When I notice this, I tell them they have to think of better endings. One time I was recording some guys that let the chord ring out on every song, so I told them on one song that they should end it "tight" with the drummer grabbing the cymbal to mute it. That ended up being the killer take but the guitar player screwed it up and ended a quarter note later. So I slapped a "feedback echo" type effect on the errant guitar chord, and it ended up being the most distinctive ending on the record. | |
